This evening, since I've completed digitizing all the edited "broadcast" versions of the old Tape and Record Show Enterprises recordings from decades ago, thought I'd digitize a third original unedited "as originally aired" three hour KNLU broadcast of Dennis Goodwin's "Orbit's Independent Sampler" from August 18. 1985, from before the actual radio shows were chopped down for TRSE into half hour weekly shows, cutting out the station bumpers, references to "current local events", and time of the hours announced by Dennis, so the half hours wouldn't become "dated".
First two three hour shows digitizations went smoothly when I did them, even though the "master tapes" hadn't been played since used to dub for the TRSE "broadcast" versions. Hit a HUGE snag with this third complete "master" however. First 90-minute cassette was recorded on a "SEL Sound Tech" audio cassette, sold by Kmart back in the day. It apparently developed "sticky tape syndrome" since 1985, causing audio squealing and tape player stoppages during playback. Spent a lot of time trying to "bypass" the issue, by rewinding/fast forwarding the tape several times, changing the pressure pad, then changing the tape reels to a new housing. Nothing helped, so I finally decided to "recreate" the first 90 minutes in a piecemeal fashion. Went back to the digitizations of the "broadcast versions", used the audio of the songs from that, but reverted to Dennis' original "dated" announcements on the original tapes, played as clear as I could get them to play. Some squealing is still heard in those segments unfortunately in the digitization. Second 90-minute tape of the original off-air three hour broadcast was on a TDK D90, and had no issues during playback.
Original KNLU broadcast aired, as stated above, Sunday, August 18. 1985, from 4:00pm till 7:00pm Central time zone. Song list included: Pepperland(George Martin), Here There and Everywhere(Emmylou Harris), World Without Love(Peter and Gordon), Warning disclaimer from "Blood Feast", Killing Floor(Michael Bloomfield/Buddy Miles), Mrs. Pressure(Roy Buchanan), I Hear You Knockin'(Gale Storm), That Old Devil Called Love(Alison Moyet), A Jump For Miles(Robert Kraft), Enjoy It(Brian Protheroe), Kara Lee(Gary P. Nunn), Love Hurts(Graham Parsons/Emmylou Harris), The One That Got Away(Steve Goodman), You Make It Seem So Easy(The Everly Brothers), Sixteen Candles(The Crests), Payday Blues(Dan Hicks and His Hot Licks), Eye Of The Tiger(Big Daddy), Delta Queen(Danny O'Keefe), Feel Your Heart(Biff Rose), Peace Like A River(Paul Simon), Maybe(Harry Nielsen), How Much Tequila Did I Drink Last Night(Steve Goodman), Bad Connection(Rosslyn Mountain Boys), To Be Alone With You(Bob Dylan), Walk of Life(Dire Straits), Along Came A Viper(Dan Hicks and His Hot Licks), Moody Park Riot(Jesse James), Be My Friend Tonight(John Prine), Loose and On My Way(Gary P. FUN FACTS: 88.7 KNLU is now known as 90.3 KEDM radio today. Last 20 minutes or so of the broadcast, Dennis gives a weather report for the day.
NOT SO FUN FACT: Dennis announces his West Monroe record store is closing at the end of August that year.
RANDOM THOUGHT: Thank goodness for "backups", even if not "complete" even pre-computer days!
