This evening, I digitized the original, unedited master audio cassette recordings of the three "rehearsal" sessions by a local amateur metal cover band, "Crystal Warrior", from the Tape and Record Show Enterprises archives. The sessions would be edited down into a 90-minute episode of "The Tape and Record Show", which was "broadcast" two years after the original recordings were made. Band consisted of Robbie Danna, Tim McCullar, Mark Brown, and Mark Hargedine(sp?). The edited "broadcast" version has been already digitized for some time now.
First session was recorded at the home of Robbie Danna, who lived next door to James Stricklin at the time. James introduced me to the group. This was also only the second time Tape and Record Show Enterprises attempted a raw, unorganized "remote" recording, first being the "Skatetown" recording in 1982. The other "remote" recordings for actual shows produced for TRSE done at James/Jerry Sanders/Randy Haney's houses were "organized", so don't fit in the same category. All the sessions were recorded in stereo, using two microphones spead out in the room recorded with a Sharp branded home cassette deck. The sessions don't sound great as a result, since no mixing was involved (I didn't have the equipment at the time to use away from the main studio). Lots of hiss from the band's amplifiers that I've never been able to filter out over the decades, vocals out in the distance, kind of reminiscent of "The Beatles First Live Recordings" I have on old Pickwick LPs. The first session was recorded on an evening Robbie Danna's parents were apparently away, since it took place in their living room, on Sunday, December 23, 1984. Think it was Robbie Danna heard practically begging the rest of the band to play the song "Wasted".
Second session was recorded the evening of Wednesday, December 26, 1984 at a storage unit on Well Road in West Monroe the band was renting. Same recording equipment used as the previous session, except it was a lot colder, due to being located just outside the unit with the door open.
Last session was recorded at the same storage unit a day later on Thursday, December 27, 1984, again with the same equipment. The storage unit business is no longer there. The gas station/convenience store which was in front of it expanded, thus obliterating the storage business. This was the longest of the three sessions, clocking in at a little over 51 minutes.
Confession: Even though I was asked by a band member to stop recording between songs, as any sneaky recording engineer would do, when it wasn't noticed, I left the tape rolling. :-P
Used "decent" quality cassettes to record these sessions on at the time, Sony HF 90 cassettes, not the el-cheapo three pack caseless tapes a lot of things from that time were recorded on.
