Puttin' The Ol' Desktop Through Another Workout

This evening, I digitized four more of the old "Jerry Sanders' Hit Parade" episodes. Really had to "crank up" the "De-hisser" and "Brilliance" for a couple of them in the computer software to help out the sound quality a bit. They were apparently originally dubbed onto a "re-purposed" low end Scotch branded cassette. The cassette apparently had something else recorded it at some point, and I re-used the tape for the "broadcast" edits of episodes 7 and 8. Even though the original label was peeled off and newer Radio Shack branded labels were on the tape, I know it was an old low-end Scotch brand, because, as far as I know, they were the only ones to ever sell a transparent blue colored cassette. In the earliest days of "Tape & Record Show Enterprises", budget was EXTREMELY "tight".

Here are the program descriptions of the episodes, from the card archives:

"Jerry Sanders' Hit Parade: Episode 7. Broadcast Sunday, March 27, 1983 at 1:30pm central. Theme Music: Morning Star(Kool & The Gang) . Songs include: Swingin'(John Anderson), Billie Jean(Michael Jackson), Fall In Love With Me(Earth, Wind, and Fire), East Bound and Down(Jerry Reed), Africa(Toto), Two Places At The Same Time(Ray Parker, Jr), Hit and Run(The Bar-Kays).

Jerry Sanders' Hit Parade: Episode 8. Broadcast Sunday, April 3, 1983 at 1:30pm central. Theme Music: Morning Star(Kool & The Gang) . Songs include: The People Next Door(Ray Parker, Jr), A Horse With No Name(America), Cutie Pie(One Way), Night People(Kool and the Gang), Call Me(Blondie), We're In This Love Together(Al Jarreau), Do Stop Talking(Ronnie Barker and Ronnie Corbett as "Chas and Dave" from "The Two Ronnies" TV series).

Jerry Sanders' Hit Parade: Episode 9. Broadcast Sunday, May 8, 1983 at 1:30pm central. Theme Music: Morning Star(Kool & The Gang) . Songs include: Jeopardy(Greg Kihn Band), Gigalo's Get Lonely Too(The Time), She Talks With Her Body(The Bar-Kays), Beat It(Michael Jackson), Atomic Dog(George Clinton), Little Red Corvette(Prince), No Stoppin' That Rockin'(Instant Funk).

Jerry Sanders' Hit Parade: Episode 10. Broadcast Sunday, May 15, 1983 at 1:30pm central. Theme Music: Morning Star(Kool & The Gang) . Songs include: In The Raw(The Whispers), Fantasy(Earth, Wind, and Fire), Working In The Coal Mine(Devo), Sandman(America), Separate Ways(Journey), Family Man(Daryl Hall and John Oates)."

Episode 8, on the "re-purposed" cassette is really "meh" sound quality wise. Heavily muffled and hissy. The remaster is only "slightly" better. Can't expect "miracles", even from modern computer software! As I mentioned in one of my earlier posts about "Jerry Sanders' Hit Parade", there is no "master tape" available to see if it sounds better, since Jerry had his storage unit broken into decades ago. The copies I'm currently digitizing are the only copies currently in existence.

Episodes 9 and 10 sounded significantly better than 7 and 8. Then again, the "broadcast copy" was on a "fresh"(not used for anything previously) higher end Scotch Dynarange© normal bias cassette. ALL the original labels were intact, even the outer case card, that's how I'm certain the tape was ONLY used for the "Hit Parade". Had to fight some "squeak" in the tape however.

Not wanting to "curse" my project concerning the old TRSE recordings, but I'm somewhat surprised I haven't had more "issues" than I have so far with these nearly four decade old cassettes. Those things don't last "forever" you know... especially the CHEAP ones bought back in the day!
