For those following my trials and tribulations in digitizing my old audio cassettes, it seems I'm getting the proper "mix" into the desktop computer using the ION cassette deck now with the RCA to 3.5mm cable instead of the decks built in USB interface.
The stereo RCA is running from the rear of the deck, and the 3.5mm plug on the other end is plugged into the input of the desktop soundcard. Actually less "hiss" heard also than with the USB connection.
Sometimes, "analog" is STILL better than digital it seems!
