Inducting into the Uber Song Hall of Fame... Blitzkrieg Bop by the Ramones
Here are a few words I wrote to welcome it in when it was inducted into the SHOF:
Fast, loud and CATCHY... It's bubblegum punk. Slightly menacing yet cartoonish lyrics which I had always interpreted to be about hyped up Nazi brownshirts on the rampage... or at least ready to do some slam dancing or something... The Nazi imagery, for some reason, appeals to me (and not because my first wife was Jewish!!). I have a fascination about the blind adoration the Germans had for Hitler... not of course for what they did to people, but for the regimentation and pageantry of it all... But ANYWAY, Blitzkrieg Bop, with its chant of "Hey Ho, Let's Go!" always made me think about that... I pictured soldiers forming in a straight line, all reved up and ready to go... Somehow the bit about piling in the back seat generating steam heat didn't quite fit with what I was thinking, but who knows what those Nazis got up to... And then the part that says "shoot 'em in the back now" might not be what I was thinking either but rather some sort of homoerotic imagery. Eugh... Regardless, the Ramones are one of my all-time favorite groups and this is among their best songs.
