These are clouds that are very high up (cirrus or higher), which catch sunlight - at night.
Given our light latitude here, midnight is actaully a sunset (just enough to see around the house at night if curtains are open).
Where low-level clouds look like shadows against the sky, the very highest clouds still catch the white light. Tonight's were subtle when I noticed (from the kitchen window) faint white whisps in the sky. They developed over about half an hour, in waves and long streaks (alternating light-warm, shadow-cold currents), until they formed something a bit 'more' 'substantial'.
I'll post pics on Flickr tomorrow-ish - CBA at the moment, and it's not something I can get very excited about; sure - I'll post here about it :o). Cloud people go wild over these, so here are some examples of people going a bit nuts about it:
