Man, I miss the way I used to be. I'd see something morally or politically repugnant and be galvanized into action. It wasn't particularly useful action, by any means, but at least I was more conscientious and active. I mean, I would go crazy and start ranting. It was fucking electric. These days I just kind of roll my eyes and tell myself not ( Read more... )

The people who you're talking about - the ones who think Dubya's a visionary leader - I don't think many of them have more than a 2% minority approval rating either.

Agreed. That's part of what I was trying to get at.

What I really hate is the "you're just a bleeding heart liberal" defense that they put up also. Since when did being a compassionate human being become such a stigma to such a vocal part of our population?

It could be that I'm a recently relocated Yankee down in the South now, but, quite frankly, I find a lot of people's attitudes down here wholly repulsive.

I have to concur with Streon there. The people who are still praising our President as the be-all-end-all of world leaders aren't looked upon so highly themselves in most cases. Remember, these are people Bush himself called the "Party of Inclusion". Racists, bigots, homophobes, and WASPs galore.

And if anything, caring is the first step to action. You have to care before you realize what needs to change.

I'm not sure, though, how much just caring cuts it anymore. A lot of people care, but there aren't enough people who care to the point where they'll do something about it. I'd like to do something, but I don't know exactly what yet. It's like I'm being paralyzed by the same weak indecision that's been plaguing the current liberal "leadership". And that bothers me because I never used to feel that way.

Things never used to be this way, either. There's never been (in our country's history) such flagrant abuse of power. It's something we're used to reading about in History books or hearing about from other countries, but once it got to our shores it was a new beast entirely.

Just the fact that you are aware that something is wrong means that you are one step ahead of those who keep thinking things are going to work out, and nothing is amiss. It's awareness that breeds anger with the situation, and positive application of anger leads to change. So, focus on the things that you know are wrong -- what can be done to correct them? How can I start locally to rectify this problem? Then take the next step up, and so on.

Unfortunately, I can't run for public office for another seven years. :P
