------------------------------------------------------------------

The white snow glitters softly in the warm winter sun. Everything is covered by a blanket of snow and you are only able to see white all around you.

Watson and Holmes rose early to start their little excursion through this winter wonderland. They stroll arm in arm through the snow and walk a wide circle around the little country house.

Holmes knows the way and Watson is content to follow him. They talk about everything and nothing; Holmes sharing stories about earlier visits and Watson comparing this vacation with the ones he did as a child.

It is peaceful. And beautiful.

They walk along the railway lines until they reach a little stream, which is not frozen as it is not cold enough.

While Watson walks over the small bridge on top of the railway lines, Holmes walks down to the stream and jumps over it.

Only to almost fall back into the water, but Watson is able to grab his flailing arm. While Holmes curses colourfully Watson has to laugh about the childish behaviour.

As they reach a small forest Holmes leads Watson to a tree with a hollow between the roots. A small cluster of snakes are curled around each other in hibernation and Holmes explains enthusiastically Watson what kind of snakes those are, how they survive the winter and so on.

Some hours later they find a fallen tree to sit down and eat their sandwiches they packed for their excursion.

While Holmes deduces the history of the fallen tree, Watson looks around them, listens to the calm silence of winter, feels the warm rays of the sun and feels the rough bark beneath his fingers.

“Holmes?”

Holmes stops his explanations and looks questioningly at him. Watson smiles softly at him.

“Thank you.”

And Holmes does not need further words to understand, as he sees the peace and quiet in his friend’s eyes.

He lays a gentle hand on the shoulder of his Boswell and smiles softly, too.

“You are welcome.”
