We've almost reached the 48-hours-after mark, and I'm still trying to (a) catch my breath and (b) just catch up, period. Sunday ended up being so crazy and weirdly timed that I almost feel like I missed everything. For example: I missed Helen on the red carpet because (a) I was walking to my Muckle's apartment through a snow flurry and (b) my mom called as soon as Helen appeared onscreen to say, "Doesn't she look beautiful!" Which I appreciated, but as I was in the kitchen at the moment making myself a vodka/raspberry-cran, I didn't actually get to SEE her. Throughout the ceremony I was busy trying to keep the Freak Flag at half mast to avoid frightening the other children. When she won, I sighed with relief and slumped to the rug, lol. I still haven't watched Barbara Walters, etc.
Lauren is awesome-tastic because she bought the Best Actress Oscar cookies with portraits of the nominees and made the other girls save Helen for me. I ended up eating two Helens -- which was weird. At first I felt rather cannibalistic, but then I decided it was more like taking communion, lol. Maybe I've been infused with some of her glory now!
But oh! Helen was glorious. We all know it anyway, but I'm SO pleased that everyone else is recognizing her grace and beauty too -- not to mention, oh yeah, her incredible talent -- even those twits on E!, who said she was one of the best dressed of the evening. Yes, she was. She totally owned. Like the BAFTAs dress, this one has rapidly grown on me, and I think she made exactly the right choice. I love Helen. I love her for eating a cheeseburger. I love her for speaking French beautifully. I love her for taking her dress on Oprah, seeming so HUMAN, and wearing a tee-shirt that says "Lah-dee-dah." And I've thought this often, but I love her for schlepping her own luggage through airports, and for just generally being fucking FIERCE. The whole night was hers, and everyone knew it. Can anyone recall an Oscars ceremony during which someone has gotten so much individual attention? Because I can't.
I'm going to post a few photos now. They're not new to y'all, but I can't resist, so here we have Taye's Highlights of the Evening (and no cuts, damn it! Because it's a special occasion):
Below is my personal favorite. Good enough to eat, anyone? Hmm?
And finally... Hmm, Meryl looks like she has imbibed a particularly "adult" cocktail. The term "controlled substance" comes to mind. I don't *actually* think that, so don't jump on me, but... I love scary Meryl!
