gdm. Stands for GODDAMN!
After much reading and filtering it all comes down to this command in console mode
gdm
Welcome to darkstar
Username: Password
This lead me to GNOME 2.6 from where I will move through the Linux:Configuring the System, courseware on MarineNet. The setup represented on that site is RedHat, using GNOME. It didn't say that but the footprint icon gave it away. Fortunately using Slackware 10.1 has enabled me to have a most comprehensive listing of Window Managers and Desktop Environments.
Update:
GNOME is GONE. Fatal error encoutered. I'm not taking the time just now to fix it. Switching to KDE.
RESULTS: Success. KDE running stable.
