30 Weeks of Fanfic - Week 25

Week 25: Music: Do you listen to music while you write? Do you make playlists to get into a certain "mood" to write your fic? Do you need noise in general? Or do you need it completely quiet?

I'll listen to music sometimes but it's for insulation rather than inspiration or mood, and it's more likely to be an oratorio or a symphony than pop/rock. Handel is my favourite composer when I'm writing, but I'll take anything from Gregorian Chant to Graeme Koehne. I listened to a lot of Chess (the original concept album) when writing Go West because of the emotional similarities between The Russian and Zhenya. In the last month or so I've been playing Rachmaninov's Liturgy of St John Chrysostom frequently, just because it's a beautiful piece of music.

During the day I often need music because there has been construction work near my flat for the last three years and the noises are very distracting. Conversely, when it's quiet on hot summer nights I like to sit with the balcony door open, enjoying the sound of wind through the trees and the occasional night bird. Even though I live in a city, there are a lot of trees here and the amount of birdsong is surprisingly high-and the cockatoos sleep at night so I am spared their screeching.
