Week 7: Have you ever had a fic change your opinion of a character?
No, not really (though I'll touch on this again in week 13).
It is always interesting to see different writers emphasising one facet of a character over others. It's like a kaleidoscope - the same few pieces with an infinite number of arrangements (or, to put it another way, the same balloon but with different bulges). There are times when a writer distorts a character so much that I find the fic completely unreadable, but that tends to be a mistake made by young or inexperienced writers, and while I might be cautious about reading that author in the future it doesn't really change my opinion of the character.
I'm not sure if this counts as "changing" but when I’m reading RPS I find that there are some characters that I don't find easy to empathise with in any fic, and I'm not sure how much of that is fanon and how much is due to their real-life personalities. While that might affect my choice of fics in the future, I certainly wouldn’t make any assumptions about a person based on fic.
