I haven't been able to shake my obsession with the
ANTI-
label since I downloaded a sampler album a few weeks ago. There's
something about a common timbre that these artists share that's
downright spooky; how can dozens of musicians from all over the place
come together at a label with such easily-meshed sounds? What makes all
of this work?
Who knows, just let it lap at you in soft waves while you doze off and be glad that this sort of thing exists.
I put the sampler on this evening as I sat down to trace out the next
few weeks of deadlines and got inevitably hung up at Daniel Lanois'
brief, distant and beautifully sombre "
Agave,"
which I hope you'll give a listen or two. This little piece tells such
a share of wordless story that it listens almost as a command to look
back at one's past, maybe even a little into one's future, and see
what's there.
