Cake. Blissful, lovely, pink-and-white iced, strawberry cake. Just the smell was enough to make his mouth water, every cell in his body straining towards the delectable treat. Kero wanted that cake.
“It’s either me or the sweets, Kero.”
He sighed, the words seeming to ring in his ears as if Suppi had said them just moments before, and not a day ago.
“You eat so many of them, I can’t even kiss you without getting drunk off the sugar. It’s all very well for you, but I’m sick of coming to my senses hours later, with a headache and fuzzy memory.”
Surely one little, tiny bite wouldn’t hurt? If only to get revenge on the cake, sitting there smirking at him, taunting him with how he wouldn’t be able to partake of its beautifully sugar-filled layers?
Kero stretched a paw towards the icing at the top. Not even a bite… just a small dip of his paw, not even a proper taste…
Suppi’s disappointed face loomed up before his mind’s eye, and he reluctantly dragged his paw back to his side. It fought him the entire way, clamoring for just a miniscule bit of the confection. He shut his eyes and turned away resolutely. Kero had promised not to touch another sweet thing, at least not while Suppi was in town. He wasn’t going to break it, no matter how the cake mocked him, resting there unattended.
He was still fighting temptation when Suppi himself floated through the window, glancing at the untouched cake in surprise.
“How long has that been there?”
Kero shrugged, eyeing Suppi with much the same gaze as he had bestowed upon the cake. The other Guardian laughed quietly, invading Kero’s personal space long enough to drop a soft kiss on his nose before pulling away.
“I’m proud. Now, let’s see about getting you a reward...”
As they flew upstairs, Kero cast one last, fleeting glance at the strawberry cake. Somehow, it didn’t seem as appealing anymore, and he left it behind without a momentary regret.
