"Again, again!" Khei giggled happily, and Marus caught Urban's eye and smiled helplessly before lifting Khei above his head once more. Urban shook his head as he sliced ingredients for dinner. Khei had Marus wrapped around his pinky finger, and the raven didn't seem inclined to do anything about it.

Then again, Urban mused as he shoved the carrots aside and started on the celery, so was he. Case in point, the addition of previously shunned vegetables that both he and Marus loathed passionately. Now picking out the offending additions was commonplace, despite his initial protests that nothing was going to change if they took Khei in.

It was kind of surreal how they'd contorted their schedules and habits around one small boy, making sure that one of them was available at all times. But it was hard to begrudge Khei the attention; still barely past six, if at all, he responded to attention like a blossoming flower, all shy smiles at first but quickly gaining confidence until his grins lit up the room.

On the other hand, he wasn't above sulking if he didn't get his way, and he was very good at finding hideaways that were almost impossible to locate if you were taller than three feet. Urban still remembered the clenching terror the first time, when he was missing for more than three hours and they only found him because Betia and Oliza stopped by on one of their rare visits to town. They were better at finding him, now, but he never could shake that first rush of fear.

So yes, raising Khei was proving to be just as much of a pain as he feared it might when they'd first stumbled across the boy in the street. But he wouldn't have given it up, and Khei's questioning smile was met with one just as bright, with no hesitation.
