More Bloody Sunday stuff.

Jun 15, 2010 11:27

I've been harping on about this a lot lately, I know. Crackchat has been subjected to my outrage at various comments on the news at least twice, I know.

Alas, my musings upon this matter are not done yet. But when they are, I'll post, like, a meme or something. Something less serious.

The Guardian is providing live updates regarding all the news on the Bloody Sunday inquiry, including reports and opinions from other newspapers.

(Compare and contrast the Mail's "It was the army that won peace in Northern Ireland, not Blair who pandered to the republican menace, and now you wish to punish them for it?!" to the Independent's "No other incident [than Lord Widgery's inquiry] has damaged Britain's reputation in Northern Ireland so much!")

There's also some links to scans of news reports from the day after it happened, which are extremely interesting from a historical perspective: I strongly recommend them, just for 'ooh, history' value.

So, yes. The report is due to be published at 3:30pm or thereabouts, along with David Cameron's speech to the House of Commons outlining his government's initial response to it.

EDIT: In an unrelated note, Sarah Palin plans to meet with Margaret Thatcher. Upon this happening, apparently Thatcher is going to use Polymerisation to fuse them into something called 'Sargarahet Patchin, the Forbidden One', at which point the apocalypse will begin.

EDIT 2: David Cameron's response will, I think, be fascinating. The Tories were against the inquiry, I think, and moreover, they're close allies of the UUP, who were strongly opposed to the inquiry, very pro-British army (and traditionally anti-Catholic, but I would hope that doesn't apply to the modern UUP), and have made comments in the past few days being highly critical of Saville and the inquiry and swearing that there must never be another inquiry into the incident. We'll see, I suppose.

EDIT 3: Right, I have stuff I need to do now. I'll find out the results and the aftermath of their publication upon my return, no doubt. Back early, it seems.
