I have rewritten the crappy advice given to me by the pediatrician's office. I have tried to be diplomatic while still promoting breastfeeding. Please let me know what you think...
While I don't have a problem offending people who choose to formula feed for idiotic or selfish reasons, I really didn't want to offend those who are forced to for a variety of reasons and really wish they were nursing.
Well, the "should be" is quoting AAP policy, so not really something I can change. And, well, I agree with it, so I wouldn't want to anyway.
Yeah the pincer grasp is a requirement for self-feeding, I should say. Some people who practice baby-led weaning wait for that before starting solids, but for those who start with a spoon probably don't need to wait if the other signs are there.
The every 5 days was in my handout so I kept it. I did every 2-3 days too, and I think it's more typical.
Comfort nursing (which I don't have issue with, although should be a personal choice - I didn't with Squeak but do with Matty) doesn't extract milk and pool it in the mouth, causing dental issues and overfeeding. I guess I consider comfort nursing more like pacifier use. I don't have issue with Mom or bottle as a security object I guess, I just have issue with the milk (or juice) in the mouth.
