My Philosophy of Education
I believe that every child should have the right to learn and get a quality education. Learning is such a broad statement and can mean different things to different people. To me, learning is a step-by-step process in which an individual experiences permanent, lasting changes in knowledge, behaviors, and ways of processing the world. In order for that learning to take place, the classroom environment has to be conducive to that in more ways than one. First, I would focus on the child. I want every child that enters into my classroom to feel safe and comfortable. I believe in order to nurture happy and confident children I must model acceptance and respect. I must connect with students and be receptive and attentive because it is my goal to make every student feel included and valued. I want every student to feel encouraged and supported in everything they do. My hope is that through doing these things, I will have created an environment where students can grow intellectually, emotionally and socially.
It is my role as an educator to expect the best from my students. I believe in setting high expectations for each child. I also realize that every child has the potential to achieve far beyond those expectations in different ways. I respect each student as their own individual beings, while also knowing that there are certain aspects of my teaching style that can benefit them all equally. I value teaching children how to think instead of what to think. My goal is to have each student thinking objectively and using their knowledge and experience to form opinions and ideas. It is my role as an educator to teach them how to form their own views and ideologies rather than just reproducing the ideas so prominent in society. I will always encourage independent thinking and critical thinking. I want to be able to teach in a way that the students not only learn the specific material but also learn how to apply what they have learned to their lives both inside and outside of school. My vision is to promote lifelong learning and to make my classroom a student-centered place where all children can be successful
I am committed to social justice and equality for all students. By demonstrating ethically correct behaviors in the classroom and expecting students to model them, I will prepare them for social interaction and survival in the future. I value diversity and I will do whatever I need to do to meet the needs of every single student. Individualized instruction is an integral strategy to aid children with different learning styles. I will provide an environment where children will use self-discovery and a hands-on approach to learning. In order to meet individual challenges, I will incorporate auditory, kinesthetic, and visual techniques.
In order to facilitate learning I will involve students in the process of assessment by giving them self-check and self-evaluation exercises. This will help students develop the ability to judge their own accomplishment and to set goals for themselves. In order to create this learning-rich environment where I have set student outcome goals, I must be insuring that I am meeting all the goals I have set for myself. I will always strive to meet my professional learning goals by asking myself regularly what instructional practices I can improve on to assure the student outcome goals are met. Just as the students, I cannot expect to become one hundred percent “full.” I will never be completely full of knowledge; there will always be growing room.
