Stargate Atlantis Review

Season 3, Sunday

Teyla:
Teyla: “My people have a day of rest every four nights.”
Dr. Hewston: “Oooh, now, that is civilized!”
Yes, it is!
I didn’t get the vibe that John is Teyla’s love interest at all. I keep thinking John is too immature for Teyla (or gay and maybe fighting with it a little bit). I’d actually like her to have a love interest that only has a short appearance on the series, or maybe no appearance at all, because nobody can be really good enough for Teyla.

Elizabeth’s “date”:
Really don’t like him. He’s a little bit too bullying and manipulative and too sure of himself, something I absolutely despise in men. This is not charm, it’s just impolite. But I liked Elizabeth in those scenes. She’s starting to grow on me. Just when she’s about to be reduced to a recurring character…
And they’re drinking Evian again. Okay, I don’t quite believe they are shipping water from Earth, when Atlantis probably has perfectly good water purifying Ancient tech. But it’s so comfortably familiar to see al those bottles standing around. Not, that I’m drinking Evian all the time. I’d be drinking Perrier. If I had the money. And OMG, I just stopped the episode at a shot of a large jug filled with lemon slices and probably lemonade. What would Rodney say? They are totally doing this on purpose. And again, Evian on the balcony, somebody needs to write a story with that title. Okay, so it’s product placement. I only needed about 100 bottles to notice.

Oh, and I love Teyla’s top. I want to wear it! She’s so cute bailing on golfing with John.

Golf:
Ronon: “So, this is a water hazard.” - ROFL, one of the funniest Atlantis lines, seriously. And John thinks his ”swing” is “sweet”. You can totally see the jealousy in his eyes when Ronon’s golf ball flies into oblivion. And when he’s trying to copy his technique, it’s one of the dorkiest John scenes, only surpassed by the one where he cleans his golf clubs with a toothbrush. John is such a dork! That’s actually what makes the character so immensely likeable.

Ronon’s “game”:
He’s so shitting John. He probably saw Monty Python on team night. Also, I think light blue is for oral sex. But I’m not a gay man, so I could be wrong about that. (And again with the gay subtext.) What’s that stuff about biting? I just realised… is John wearing pink underwear here? I couldn’t believe it, when they started hopping on one leg, so funny! That’s entertainment.

John and Ronon “chilling”:
John: "Are you dating anyone?"
Ronon: "You mean, like a woman?"
John: "Or a man."
I liked this dialogue. As a slasher I obviously love it when they do stuff like that, although I keep getting surprised by it. Even as a non-slasher, I’d probably say, every mention of the possibility of being gay without a funny or exaggerated context is good. Not that I don’t like the funny stuff too, because I do.
That John asked this question makes me wonder. Does he think Ronon is gay or bi? It comes across as John telling Ronon he’s okay with him being gay, even if Ronon may have heard something about some really strange and stupid Earth customs. Or maybe John just picked up on Ronon liking to kick his ass a little bit too much.
I like that Ronon isn’t ready for a relationship, even after 8 ½ years, because relationships in tv often come across as forced into situations they don’t fit into. And I also think it’s consistent with the trauma he went through. Because really bad trauma = no relationships for a lot of people. Sometimes you just need to deal with yourself for a while.
John was married! *squee* I now have this image in my head of a string of ex-wifes, all relationships gone bad due to disastrous emotional incompatibilities and excessive sleeping around on his part (with their brothers, sisters and/or best friends). I can’t help it! I’m totally convinced, John is bi and in the process of struggling a little bit with it, maybe slowly realizing he could try a relationship with a man for a change, while in Atlantis (like Ronon??). But that’s probably just my brain, which constantly lives in the gutter.

Rodney:
Rodney in a blue bathrobe! And he thinks, he’s an easy guy to work for. So cute!
So he runs around Atlantis in his bathrobe, when there are emergencies in the middle of the night, which is probably pretty regularly.
I actually really liked the scenes with Katie this time. I didn’t like her in “Duet”. But now I thought, their interaction was pretty straightforward and Rodney really makes an effort, which is sweet.

Loved Zelenka’s chess tournament, but loved Lorne painting even more (and his painting too). I guess, Carson didn’t want to take Dr. Biro fishing. Nice scene for her too.

Carson and Exploding tumors:
OMG. Exploding tumors! ROFL Try to say it 10 times in a row. Okay, it’s not a bad plot or something, it just sort of comes across as funny, which actually is bad in this episode, because, you know, a main character dies. So we know definitely since The Game, that the Ancients were evil! They used real humans to play their depraved cross-between-Civilization-and-Sims-game. Bad Ancients! And now they built a device that creates exploding tumors too. Some day I’ll finish my bad Ancients! Story I started during season 1. Really.
Carson’s death really surprised me, but maybe I was distracted by the Grey’s Anatomy parallel. I just saw this episode this week! Carson carefully lifting the tumor and placing it in a box, handing it off to the expert, who goes boom! I was also thrown for a loop by the episode no. 14 stuff. So I was like, exploding tumors, lol, where am I? Southpark? Then Carson does the Dr. Grey. And suddenly he’s dead. What? Really? I was sort of expecting an involved plot about the retrovirus with Carson either on a guilt trip or going slightly mad scientist (which would have been interesting). Oh, well. I have to add, I’m among the people who hate Carson (at least most of the time). I actually just don’t like the character. But thinking back I do remember a few scenes with him, that I thought were funny.

Wow, that took long. No more reviews for me for a while. (Except when I can’t resist.)
