Short introspective John piece

One day he suddenly noticed that the stars in the Pegasus Galaxy were different. He stood outside on a balcony after a mission staring up into the sky and it just occurred to him. Of course he had known that he wasn’t even in the Milky Way anymore and the constellations had to be different, but he hadn’t been really aware of it. And now it hit him. He was in another galaxy with different stars, planets, nebulae and black holes. And he travelled among them. Okay, so all the planets looked sort of like earth. He thought that excused his lapse.

He took to wandering through the long and empty hallways by night, only seldomly meeting any people at all. They didn’t work in shifts that much. Late at night there was only a skeleton crew left in the gateroom, the occasional marine patrol in the corridors and one or two stray scientists unable to pry themselves away from their labs long enough for a full night’s sleep, scurrying about in search of coffee. The hallways stayed dim if he didn’t think on the light, illuminated only by the faint glowing of the ornamental water conduits. And he didn’t think on the light. He was perfectly comfortable wandering the hallways in darkness.

When he was 8 his father took him to a fair. It was the first time he rode on a Ferris Wheel. He looked down at the blinking and pulsing attractions of the fair. The people milling around between them were not quite as small as ants, but they came close. It was so high. John looked down at the toy world far beneath. The wind blew his hair out of his face. And the feeling ... it was like soaring, like gently gliding on the wind. It was not quite night yet. On the horizon there was a sliver of purple left over from dusk. Further away the hills around the fair rose darkly beneath the deep blue evening sky. They were interspersed with lights not quite recognisable as windows from this far away. They looked like gems strewn over the landscape, or like stars. Every time John looked up into the night sky he remembered that moment. When he looked up to the stars on Atlantis he thought of crossing the gate and setting foot on another world, and of windows in the night.
