I started writing a post about the console wars, but I realized how whiney I sounded so I didn't post it. Instead, I'm gonna talk about each company. First what they've done right, then what they've done wrong, and last what I think of them. Yes, what I really think.
Let's start with Microsoft.
The Xbox 360 came out much earlier than the other 2 consoles, that really helped them. Pretty much, they sold all the systems they were gonna sell, before there was any competition.
Now I'm gonna combine the negative with the what I think, because I really think they're the same. Microsoft really only ever made a new kind of computer, the kind you plug a controller into. Most of the games for Xbox can be either played on Sony's machines or the PC. They have no voice of their own, and mostly got the PC gaming crowd. On top of that, Microsoft is just not well liked.
Moving on. Sony.
The Playstation 3 will be an incredible machine. Best graphics out there, and insane possessing power. Unfortunately, that's all the good I can say about it.
With all this new technology, they've really been overextending themselves. The systems were constantly crashing at E3, and it makes people wonder if we aren't just looking at another recall like with the Playstation 2. Because they didn't want to be the last to launch they're cutting Europe out for another 6 months, and they still won't have a quarter as many systems as Nintendo. What's more the price is a joke, and the thought that the Playstation 3 will outlast the next generation (10 years from now) is a pipe dream.
Personally, I'm mad at Sony for ditching they're new controller design, just so they could add sub-standard motion sensitivity. It is a blatantly obvious attempt to steal Nintendo's crowd, they aren't even trying to hide it. Although they put out a good machine, stealing Nintendo's crowd and ideas is really what Sony does best. Think about it, the Playstation 1 looked an awful lot like the Super Nintendo. Then Nintendo 64 came out with a joystick and rumble pack, and suddenly Pow! The Playstation came out with a newer better controller that implemented these things. Now, they've done the same thing again. They let Nintendo take all their risks for them.
Nintendo.
Though the Wii is not the best graphically, it is a serous improvement over the last generation of console. In addition, the innovation of the controller is a tribute to what made the legend of Nintendo in the old days. Also the ability to download retro games is a big seller for this system. They haven't overextended themselves, and have all of their ducks in a row for launch. As a result, they are ahead of schedule, will have ample systems to sell, and will have 30 software as well as 30 downloadable games out by the end of the year. 60 in all, only a month and so many days after launch!
Nentendo has done quite a few things right, but they have done some wrong thing as well. With a few gamers the new controller seems like too much work, this is a minority. The real issue is with the fact that they have not advertised in the USA at all! I actually went to a second-hand game store and the girl behind the counter asked me, 'What's a Wii?' There have also been some complaints about the price of the controllers, which have more technology then ever before and are sold in 2 pieces.
I have always believed in Nintendo. I've owned all of their systems, even the so-called bad ones. (with the exception of some of the Gameboy models) I think, though, that my faith in them goes beyond fan-girl. They are a group of gamers, who make games for gamers, and they've never been afraid of redefining what 'gamer' means. They would rather release something late and be sure of the quality, then race to finish first with something not quite right. And though it was a hard lesson, they've even learned to listen to their fans. Now they're taking back what's theirs, and more power to them.
Maybe, I'm just an old-school gamer girl with too many opinions. Maybe, my time of glory is in the past. I don't like to think so. Now I'm gonna say the taboo thing, I couldn't care less about the graphics. I'm sick of hearing 'best graphics' like that's what matters. Icing on the cake, when did gaming become about that?
