The Eisners have been announced at the
Comic-Con site. I'm starting to recognize more and more names on the list, which is exciting.
John Cassaday, Paul Pope, Robert Kirkman, and Jill Thompson all appear on the list, and if I haven't actually read their stuff, I do know who they are. (Cassaday I've actually read, and I think I've read shorts by Thompson. I loved Kirkman's Invincible and am hoping to eventually get that whole series.) Fun Home got several nominations, which is no surprise, despite the fact that I found it entirely uninteresting. American Born Chinese is on the list, which is amazingly exciting--that one is both literary *and* fun, and it really blew me a way. Fables (in its various incarnations) got some nominations, which is great. Castle Waiting apparently still exists, which means I need to track down the volumes I don't have. The new Brett Matthews/Sergio Cariello Lone Ranger got nominated for best new series against Jack of Fables. Ode to Kirohito, which is a really interesting, sci-fi look at the nature of humanity originally published in Japan years ago, is competing against Absolute Sandman and The Eternals (the original run) for best archival collection.
The Eisners are making a concerted effort to include more manga to reflect the market. Unfortunately, since that's what I'm really most familiar with, I'm still not seeing the titles I recognize--I didn't see any of the hip new OEL (Original English Language) manga that's trying to expand what it means to be manga.
Which means, I guess, that I need to continue to expand my reading list, so I get more familiar with what they *are* selecting. I am impressed at the addition of web comics to the ballot (though that's probably a few years old at this point), and we glad to see Phil and Kaja Foglio's "Girl Genius" on the list.
And now that I'm done rambling about comics, I should get back to work.

A big thanks to all the writers who posted their pixilated-technophile-wretch(?) fiction yesterday! Now that I'm aware of it, I'll find a piece to not submit to magazines and instead publish online.
