"I believe, I just... I think I'm on the wrong ship." -Shepherd Book, Firefly, episode "Serenity"
"I do believe; help my unbelief." Mark 9:24 (New American Standard Bible Translation)
The scripture I'm quoting here is one of my favorites, as I think is particularly relevant to folks who are in creative professions. It takes a whole lot of belief to take the risk of putting yourself out there, creating writings and visual arts and even stage characters that people might reject, whole sale. Maybe such rejection happens in other professions, too, but I suspect that nowhere is it as personal as the arts--nowhere does it require as much faith.
A lot of life, beyond religion, requires having that same kind of faith--relationships, friendships, even something as simple as believing you'll survive your karate test and make it through the changes going on in your life. I think that part of having that faith is recognizing that you do, in fact, have doubts. Sometimes you need reassurance from your higher power. Sometimes you just need reassurance from someone who is there beside you, telling you that maybe you're exactly where you ought to be.
(I now really want to know if Joss Whedon intentionally based Book's line off of that scripture passage. The world may never know.)
