"Make it quick, pal, this is kinda breaking the rules a bit."

Kay smiled at Gumshoe, a little daredevil grin. "Don't worry, Gummy, I won't get you in trouble," she told him, brightly. "Thanks for doing this for me."

The detective looked abashed at the thanks, rubbing the back of his head and dithering, "Yeah, well-- it's Pops, y'know? And you. I couldn't really say no, pal." With a sheepish grin at her, he unlocked the holding cell's door and shooed Kay in-- not that Kay really needed the urging. The moment the door was open, she all but flew into the room, throwing her arms around Badd as he turned to see who it was.

He oofed, startled at the sudden impact to his chest, and murmured, "Kay?" His hands hesitated on her shoulders, and she shrugged slightly into the touch, hugging Badd tighter. "What're you... doing here?"

"I had to see you before your trial," she said to his collarbone-- really, no matter how big she got, Badd always made her feel ten again-- then pulled back slightly, a grin flashing across her face. "Brought you some lollipops for good luck," she added, digging them out of her pouch and brandishing them at him. They were his favorites, strawberry and peach and banana-- she'd picked through a bag to find the right ones.

Badd hesitated, then took them, even as he scolded, evenly, "You shouldn't be here. Who let you in?" He looked over her head, to Gumshoe, lurking just outside the door.

"I couldn't say no to her, pops," Gumshoe said, looking even more abashed and just a smidge guilty. "I know it's against the rules, but--"

"Heh." The soft noise cut Gumshoe off, and Badd let a rare smile twitch at one corner of his mouth. It made Kay grin all the wider. "You don't have to... explain Kay to me."

Kay took a half-step back from Badd and looked to her friend. "Anyway, it's not like either of us is gonna tattle on you, Gummy," she told him, then looked up at Badd, sobering a bit. "You gonna be okay for the trial?"

Badd shrugged. "Knew it would come... someday," he said, slowly, and unwrapped one of the lollipops. "I've had... a lot of time to make peace."

"Yeah, well, that doesn't really answer the question," Kay said, crossing her arms at him. "Anyway, who knows? You might get off, right?"

He chuckled, lowly, and popped the lolly into his mouth, speaking around it with the ease of long practice. "I confessed. Not even Payne could screw up... convicting me."

"Pshaw, I've still got a day to find you a defense attorney. You'll see, you'll be fine--" Kay started, all confidence and teenaged bravado. She cut off at the look Badd gave her, wilting slightly. "Well... it's not like you did anything wrong, right, Uncle Badd?" she asked, instead, tone a little hopeful and a little desperate.

"Maybe not wrong... but it was illegal as hell." He tilted his head back, rolled the lolly from one side of his mouth to the other, and murmured, "I knew the risks, Kay. All... three of us did. If you're going to walk in our footsteps--"

"I am!" she declared, clenching a determined fist in the air before her. Badd gave her another subduing look.

"-- if you're going to walk... the path we did, Kay..."

"I know."

He paused, looking down at her, an eyebrow quirked at her suddenly serious tone. She looked back, gaze steady, all traces of grins gone from her face.

"I've known how risky it is for seven years, Uncle Badd. And I'm not gonna forget anytime soon. But... it's still the right thing, y'know?" She stared up at him, and he stared back, and then that rare twitch of a smile started at the corner of his mouth.

"You're just as bad... as he was," he told her, and laid a hand on her head. "Faraday would... be proud."

"... Thanks, Uncle Badd," she said, quietly, heart swelling in her chest, a sting in her eyes. Not that she was going to cry, of course.

He shrugged, and unwrapped the strawberry lolly-- Kay's favorite-- and handed it to her. "Get outta here, kiddo. Before Detective Gumshoe... gets in trouble."

Kay nodded, and gave Badd her biggest, most loving grin through her definitely-not-tears. "See you at the trial," she chirped, voice all cheer, and threw her arms around him for one final squeeze. He hugged her back, gently, then let her go.

She did go, then, out the door, and past Gumshoe, pressing her tears away with the heels of her hands before turning towards him. "Hey, Gummy! Let's go out for noodles!" she enthused, grinning as if everything was okay.

Maybe it nearly was.
