World Cup 101

Um...This entry is really just a good excuse for me to use my Villa and Torres icon from two years ago ^^;

I guess I might as well make this a football orientated entry, since I don't think I've really made a proper one for the World Cup so far. So here's a little analysis of the three teams I'm backing.

I'll start with Spain I guess, since it's all fresh in my mind. I didn't see their first game, against Switzeland. I was at work, bah. But I saw some highlights and it looked like they just had huge trouble finding the back of the net. So yeah, bummer. But tonight they did better. They scored a couple and should should beat Chile on Friday night. I think they'll most definitely up their ante against Chile. There's no way they'll be showboating round the box in favour of taking shots like they seemed to do a damned lot tonight. And the possiblity of Spain v Portugal in the next round is actually rather mouthwatering, lol.

Japan next. They have really really impressed me so far with their two games. The win against Cameroon was brilliant! Nobody expected it and pretty much all the Cameroon players had at least a head in size on the Japanese players, but they were so solid and got their goals. Perfect. Then against Holland I thought they were really unlucky. Were very solid again and Holland were lucky to win that one, in my opinion. I really really want them to get the better of Denmark.

And England. Well, what can I say. Two very lacklustre performances so far. The first one didn't worry me too much. We were unlucky not to win it. A bad goalkeeping error is a shit way to lose two points. But we really should have taken the game to the Americans a bit more. As for against Algeria. Well, words cannot even begin to explain how utterly awful it was. I mean, I assumed that we would win comfortably. But our performance was so bad I honestly felt the most ashamed ever to be English. If they can't raise their game against Slovenia, then it's over, and they deserve to go out. Simple as. I really hope we can raise our game to the proper levels though.

Incidentally I can't actually watch England v Slovenia because of it being so inconveniently placed on a Wednesday afternoon. Gonna be at work. It'll probaably be a ghost town, but I have to stay there and change the book charts, just wondering what the hell is going on. Maybe it's for the best...

But overall, this World Cup, so far, has been the most bizarre thing ever. Little teams beating big teams. Some of the more fancied teams in real possible chance of being eliminated straight away (France, Italy, England, and even Spain). Plus some truly awful refereeing. Hello the red card for Harry Kewell! I mean, I know I'm a little biased 'cause he played for Liverpool once upon a time, but it's not like he had much option about handballing that. He never had time to move out of the way of the ball. Stupid, really.

But yeah, should probably stop there. Have to be up at 5:30am for a 7am start. We're trialling a slight change at work this week. Seeing if doing the book delivery in the morning rather than the evening works out better. We shall see. Bed soon though, maybe a weenie bit of fanfic reading first ^^;
