these things used to be nouns. now they are verbs. still: a wolf scarf might be nice these days -- it's getting chilly. a few miles from oxford is a town called wolvercote, and whenever i look at a map, i think damn, i need to get me one of those. it would be so warm in winter.
we live in summertown (but not for long). basically a two-minute walk from where we lived that summer i did the poetry course, and it was summer then, and when we left, i pictured summertown being a place of eternal summer, and for that matter, eternal poetry courses. these days it starts getting dark about 3pm, and everyone starts rushing home to shut their curtains and turn on their lights and pretend it's just night time already. that's who is on the bus at that hour: people trying to make it home before the urge to commit suicide overtakes them.
speaking of depressing things ... a little way past the shops on banbury road is restaurant called cafe ziggy, which looks kind of nice but is always empty. i noticed the other day that they now have not one, but two flashing neon 'open' signs in the window. i want to meet the manager of this place. clearly, this guy woke up one morning and said to himself, "alright, i have a plan. i didn't do six years of postgraduate studies in restaurant management at oxford university for nothing. i'm going to bring this place back to life, make it irresistible to customers, and boost our revenues. this is the year cafe ziggy makes it big. what we need, gentlemen, is another sign."
