So this thing is horrendously time-consuming, but I figure this is the best way to get Amalia's... everything down, and I always learn new things about my own characters when I do this, so--!
Body and Appearance
1. Describe the character's height and build. Is she heavyset, thin, short, rangy?
She's thin, in the way that you'll have to stare at her for quite some time to notice some subtle curves-- and by that time, Amalia will most likely have asked why you're staring. Just by looking at her, you could tell she was probably awkward as a kid, but she's eventually grown into her body. She's 5'4'', which only annoys her when there's something out her reach and she has to enlist help to get it-- but at least she's taller than Emi, which is somewhat of a comfort. Don't ask me why.
2. How old is she?
Fifteen! But since her birthday's in July, and the game started in July, she'll be turning sixteen rather soon.
3. Describe her posture. Does she carry herself well or does she slouch?
That all depends. Amalia's easy to read because of her body language. It's not that she always keeps her back straight and her head level, because she doesn't; her posture isn't the greatest and she slumps a lot when she sits, until someone tells her to do otherwise.
4. How is her health? Is she fit or out of shape? Any illnesses or conditions? Any physical disabilities?
Someone with an interest in various sports is definitely going to be fit, and she's on her school's lacrosse team, which is added incentive to stay in shape. She tries to fit in a jog every morning, and does that as early as she can so she can do it and come back and shower before Emi wakes up. There's only one "condition" she gets, where her left foot cramps up from time to time, and she's long since given up on trying to figure out why and just works it out. And she's prone to winter colds, but it's hardly ever anything serious.
5. How does she move? Is she clumsy, graceful, tense, fluid?
... She moves with energy. XD I'm not sure how else to put it, but there's always this tension humming in her bones that keeps Amalia moving and alert. This allows her to move fluidly or in quick, darting movements, depending on what's required, but she's hardly a languid person. If she's with someone who is moving slowly, she tries to slow down to their pace, but often ends up failing and just dragging that poor person along with her.
6. How attractive is this character physically? How does she perceive herself in the mirror?
She's... cute. She's just not the type of person you can look at and right away think, "Oh, what a pretty person!" Because you can't, not without a second glance. ... Unless this is post-Emi makeover session #Who-Even-Knows, because Ama's since learned it's not worth the fuss. And she doesn't spend much time in front of the mirror, because she knows what she looks like, and she's pretty zen about that aspect: why fret about things you can't really change? I mean, I'm sure being Emi's roomie has made her use a little bit of makeup (for placatory purposes), but I doubt Amalia will actually care about whether or not she looks attractive until she develops a crush on somebody. (And who knows when that will happen?)
7. Describe her complexion. Dark, light, clear, scarred?
Clear and tan. The tan comes from her Mexican heritage and hours spent outside, the clear comes from good genes. She also likes to joke that with sports, she just ends up sweating out all the impurities.
8. Describe her hair: color, texture, style.
Black and soft, but the style isn't really anything fashionable. She used to wear it long and in braids, up until a certain point where a classmate said that no girl would ever dare hack off her own hair, and Amalia... did. And found it liberating and much easier to manage, at that! Right now, it's growing out, where the longer sections are closer to her neck and just barely touch her shoulders now. It's kind of given her a more feminine appearance, compared to her younger years when some people couldn't tell whether she was a boy or not. Her bangs are also ridiculously long, but they don't seem to bother her.
9. What color are her eyes?
Brown. Brown and large and perfect for giving Puppy Dog Eyes, except she's too honest to ever abuse that. Though she does do it unintentionally every so often.
10. Does the character have any other noteworthy features?
She's got a small scar on her right knee from a nasty spill she took off her bike when she was a kid, but that's not really noteworthy. XD And if you mean facial features, not at all!
11. What are her chief tension centers?
... She gets headaches when under stress?? Idek.
12. What is the character's wardrobe like? Casual, dressy, utilitarian? Bright colors, pastels, neutrals? Is it varied, or does she have six of the same suit?
Amalia likes bright colors, and is happiest when she's wearing something she can move in. For that reason, she absolutely HATES to be dressed up in tight-fitting things and heels, because she always feels like her balance has been compromised. Her wardrobe's varied in the way that she's got different pairs of jeans and shorts and like... maybe one skirt, but yeah. She also has a collection of bandannas in assorted colors that she likes to tie around her neck, just in case.
Mind you, this is all stuff outside of school, because otherwise she's just stuck with the uniform.
13. Do her clothes fit well? Does she seem comfortable in them?
They do, and she is! She'll never admit it, but she's got some sewing experience from her mother, so if there's any clothes that she needs to hem or take in, she just does that herself.
14. Does she dress the same on the job as she does in her free time? If not, what are the differences?
What job. ;A; Like I said before, she wears her school uniform at school and her other stuff when she's not.
15. You knew it was coming: Boxers, briefs or commando?
...
SHE'S A GIRL BOXERS ... No really, she's a girl, panties.
Speech
1. What does this character's voice sound like? High-pitched, deep, hoarse?
It sounds-- normal?? Singing-wise, she could either be a second soprano or an alto, and her voice only goes higher when she's surprised or excited. She's yet to squeak, though.
2. How does she normally speak? Loud, soft, fast, evenly? Does she talk easily, or does she hesitate?
HAHAHA she is a fast speaker, and accustomed to being both that and loud when she's at home, because SO MANY PEOPLE. Thanks to that, Amalia can definitely be heard in a crowd or whenever she wants to be, so if she's got something to say, rest assured you'll be able to hear her say it. She has never hesitated to say a thing in her life, regardless of what it is; to her, that's just a waste of time. For the sake of anyone she studies with, though, she can speak quietly, and can exhibit tremendous amounts of patience when she's helping someone with Spanish. (But she will correct you sternly if your pronunciation and accenting is horrid.)
3. Does the character have a distinct accent or dialect? Any individual quirks of pronunciation? Any, like, you know, verbal tics?
She's got a trace of a Spanish accent, but it's really only evident when she speaks it or when she's upset. And she has to catch herself from rolling her r's at times.
4. What language/s does she speak, and with how much fluency?
She's bilingual; she speaks English and Spanish fluently, having been exposed to both languages since birth.
5. Does she switch languages or dialects in certain situations?
She does! She speaks English in school, though she'll speak Spanish deliberately when she feels like being a brat, or sometimes she just doesn't have the right word in English, so she'll substitute words. At home, she speaks solely Spanish around her grandfather and switches up when it's just with her parents and her siblings.
6. Is she a good impromptu speaker, or does she have to think about her words?
She's a very impromptu speaker, though I'm not sure if I'd call her a good one. She could afford to word things a little more eloquently at times, but by the time she realizes that, her mouth's already opened and words have already emerged.
7. Is she eloquent or inarticulate? Under what circumstances might this change?
... Let's just say Amalia says what she wants/needs to say, and sometimes it can be eloquent, but most of the time, as long as the meaning gets across, she doesn't care whether it is or not. She's really only eloquent when it comes to older people she genuinely respects, like her grandparents and her parents. Possibly some of her teachers.
Mental and Emotional
1. How intelligent is this character? Is she book-smart or street-smart?
She's both! More street-smart, because that's how daredevils are, and she's always been of the opinion that you won't learn things if you don't actually experience them for yourself. But she had to study a lot in order to get her Adessi scholarship and she takes that very seriously. She's got a good memory, which helps a lot when it comes to textbook learning.
2. Does she think on her feet, or does she need time to deliberate?
She thinks on her feet, because she's rarely off them. Her feet usually start moving before her mind does, but once that gets going, it's moving a mile a minute and she's doing what needs to be done in as short a time as possible. That's not to say that Amalia doesn't ponder things, because she does, it's just... a rare thing, and she only deliberates when it's an important issue that she knows will take some time to work through.
3. Describe the character's thought process. Is she more logical, or more intuitive? Idealistic or practical?
She's intuitively practical. Ama trusts her gut feelings, and they haven't let her down yet. She combines logic and ideals, though, so she believes in creativity, but there has to be a level of practicality to back it up or she doesn't think you'll be able to accomplish anything. ... If that makes sense.
SO, as an example, say Amalia sees someone getting bullied. Her first thought would be TAKE DOWN THE BULLIES. But then her second thought would be analyzing the best way to do that, how to get the bullied kid out of the fray, etc. Not that she'd stand there and ponder it for too long; ultimately, she'd jump into the fight without more than a few seconds of thinking.
4. What kind of education has the character had?
Completed elementary at a public school, completed middle at a public school, got a scholarship for Adessi Hall and entered as a freshman. Probably had a rough time of it her first year until she established who she was and what she stood for. At this point in time, she's paying much more attention to the people around her instead of her studies, though chances are she now knows some of them a little better.
5. What are her areas of expertise? What, if anything, is she interested in learning more about?
... Sports. She follows all the school teams, and almost all professional sports (except for golf). Spanish and its culture is another area, and she's very interested in learning about cooking (because she's a failure), art, and journalism, since all sorts of events interest her. She's also got kind of a fondness for foreign languages, and wouldn't mind trying to pick up a third-- she just doesn't know which one. She'd probably be good at Italian after awhile, considering its similarities.
6. Is she an introvert or an extrovert?
Extrovert alllll the way.
7. Describe the character's temperament. Is she even-tempered or does she have mood swings? Cheerful or melancholy? Laid-back or driven?
She's cheerful and headstrong and motivated. Amalia likes people and loves making friends, but if someone is trying to boss her around or does something she disagrees with, or treats her as inferior, she's going to snap back, and snap back hard. She's set in her convictions, and she's not fond of being treated differently for any reason. When she's not being stubborn, she's easy to approach and always takes an interest in other people's hobbies and personalities.
8. How does she respond to new people or situations? Is she suspicious, relaxed, timid, enthusiastic?
I probably will say this many more times before this survey ends: Amalia is a daredevil. She doesn't approach anything timidly, and is usually the first person to offer friendship or, at the very least, unbridled curiosity. If the situation's obviously a dangerous one, she's... not quite as chipper about it, but she'll get her hackles up and go in there prepared for anything. She really isn't the type to hold back.
9. Is she more likely to act, or to react?
AMALIA IS A DARED-- okay, yeah, you know this. Act, all the way. Someone's got to make the first move, right?
10. Which is her default: fight or flight?
Amalia doesn't believe in running away, unless the outcome is laid out before her as NO CHANCE OF VICTORY. That's how she is with dares, too. So if it comes down to fight or flight, it's almost always going to be fight.
11. Describe the character's sense of humor. Does she appreciate jokes? Puns? Gallows humor? Bathroom humor? Pranks?
Jokes she likes, pranks she adores (so long as they aren't actually harmful) and most of them are out of retribution, and puns and bathroom humor both make her roll her eyes and groan. She's got kind of a teasing personality once she gets to know someone, as evidenced by her nicknames for some people.
12. Does the character have any diagnosable mental disorders? If yes, how does she deal with them?
She does not!
13. What moments in this character's life have defined her as a person?
When she was four, her grandmother sat her down and told her that, no matter what people thought of her, as long as she did what she felt was right, she had to keep doing it, because she was an Escobar and people wouldn't stop thinking what they thought until she proved them wrong on her own.
That was the first. I'm too lazy to go into detail on the rest, but the day they got their ridiculous dog, Ama's first day of school, the days her younger siblings were born, the day she applied to Adessi Hall and subsequently the days she was accepted and her first day there, the day she first accepted a dare, the day her grandmother died, THE DAY THEY STARTED SENDING LETTERS-- wait.
14. What does she fear?
Not making something of herself. In a sense, letting her family down after her parents sacrificed so much to ensure that their kids could have a better education and go forth to do better things. She's got the hope and the drive to do great things, but she sometimes feels as though she doesn't have the experience.
She's also afraid of getting burned, but that was due to not being supervised closely enough as a child and there was an incident involving a stove, so yes. :(
15. What are her hopes or aspirations?
There are a few things. She likes sports, but she doesn't want to play professionally. If anything, she'd like to travel abroad and help out kids in other countries, or teach a foreign language. She'd like to paint at least one good thing, and she WANTS TO MASTER MEXICAN FOOD LO SIENTO MI FAMILIA I'VE LET YOU DOWN.
16. What is something she doesn't want anyone to find out about her?
Besides the fact that she really sucks at making enchiladas? Probably that deep down, she isn't always as fearless as she appears. Half of the stunts she's pulled as a kid have broken bones and whatnot, and sometimes she wants to back down or wishes for support, but she just keeps plugging away. She was kind of nervous during her freshman year (not that she showed it) because she didn't know anybody and scholarship students were few and far between, but she became determined to make the best of it and forced herself to keep going until it became easier.
Relationships
1. Describe this character's relationship with her parents.
They're close! Amalia's mother comes off as kind of strict and has a ton of rules about keeping the house neat and maintained, but she has a love for the American Girl series and ended up giving Amalia the middle name of Josefina (which she hates). Her dad is the playful sort, but once he puts his foot down, there isn't a single person who'll argue with him. He's the one who offered Amalia pointers when she used to get into fights with her older brother.
2. Does the character have any siblings? What is/was their relationship like?
... Oh boy does she. She's got five: two older sisters (Esperanza and Pilar), an older brother (Miguel), a little brother (Ricardo), and a little sister (Elise). Since Ama was more of a tomboy, she grew up closer to (and fighting with) Miguel, and most of her interactions with her sisters were things like them braiding her hair and dragging her to their tea parties in their room. They never really appreciated her fascination with reptiles, either-- but her little sister does. Amalia has been left in charge of the two youngest ones quite a bit, so she's fairly close to them, and they get all grumpy and pouty whenever she leaves for a long amount of time.
3. Are there other blood relatives to whom she is close? Are there ones she can't stand?
There are her grandparents: her grandfather, whom Ama is deeply respectful to, and her grandmother, who spent the most time with her when she was growing up. She's the one who taught Ama the meaning and customs behind holidays like Dia de los Muertos and she had a skill for making worry dolls. In Ama's opinion, she was also the best cook in the family. She suffered from a stroke and died a few months before Amalia got the acceptance letter to Adessi Hall. As a memento, Ama keeps a worry doll she received from her as a child under her pillow, and speaks quietly to it every night.
4. Are there other, unrelated people whom she considers part of her family? What are her relationships with them?
There are not!
5. Who is/was the character's best friend? How did they meet?
I'm... going to save this one for until the game gets a little more underway. I think her closest friend might actually be Emi.
6. Does she have other close friends?
Again, saving this one for later on in the game, so come back later! She has a few friends still from elementary, but they've kind of gone their separate ways.
7. Does she make friends easily, or does she have trouble getting along with people?
She's very friendly, so it's not hard to befriend her at all. The people she doesn't get along with tend to be either narcissistic, snobby, or just plain mean. She can be known to butt heads with certain people, too.
8. Which does she consider more important: family or friends?
Family, though she contends that once you've got friends who are close enough, they're practically family anyway.
9. Is the character single, married, divorced, widowed? Has she been married more than once?
She's single!
10. Is she currently in a romantic relationship with someone other than a spouse?
HAHAHAHA no.
11. Who was her first crush? Who is her latest?
Her first crush was in second grade on a kid whose face and name she doesn't remember now. And as for her latest, that's a secret. Because she doesn't have one yet
12. What does she look for in a romantic partner?
Support. She doesn't want someone constantly fretting over her, so they'd have to be at least a little used to her shenanigans, but she'd appreciate having someone there to rely on. In this case, I don't think it's something she actively looks for, but she probably needs someone quieter, who can have a calming influence on her. And they have to be at least somewhat kind. I guess good-looking ranks up there somewhere, too. SHE REALLY DOESN'T HAVE ANY PREFERENCES if she likes them, she likes them. DX
MIND YOU, this is the girl who will get supremely flustered if someone genuinely thinks she's cute, so like I said, a lot of the aforementioned isn't really anything she consciously thinks about.
13. Does the character have children? Grandchildren? If yes, how does she relate to them? If no, does she want any?
No, and she doesn't want any for a very long time.
14. Does she have any rivals or enemies?
Not yet she doesn't, unless you include sports teams.
15. What is the character's sexual orientation? Where does she fall on the
Kinsey scale?
She's heterosexual, I guess between a 1 and a 2 on that thing?
16. How does she feel about sex? How important is it to her?
She's never had it, she's got more important things to think about, and the one time she spent at her sister's house where they were making Niece-or-Nephew #9 upstairs has definitely made her try to ignore most thoughts about it.
17. What are her turn-ons? Turn-offs? Weird bedroom habits?
SHE'S ONLY FIFTEEN.
Beliefs
1. Do you know your character's astrological (
zodiac of
choice) sign? How well does she fit type?
She's a Leo! She's got the affection, sincerity, energy, creativity, and fiery personality down pat. But she doesn't possess the haughtiness and arrogance and sexual drive-- though she's got the hasty temper. And occasionally, she is too trusting, though once you've betrayed that trust, it's nearly impossible to gain it back.
2. Is this character religious, spiritual, both, or neither? How important are these elements in her life?
She follows traditions and does the whole Catholic thing, but she does that kind of out of habit than out of any actual belief. She doesn't dwell on religion too much, but all this increasing talk of demons has gotten her interest piqued in the supernatural-- and that sort of thing intrigues her.
3. Does this character have a personal code of morals or ethics? If so, how did that begin? What would it take to compromise it?
After life with siblings, she made a vow not to pick on others. She'll also refuse to take up a dare if it involves harm coming to someone else, be it physical or mental. She doesn't touch drugs, either. Her parents raised her to be someone who looked out for others and took care of their own body, and Ama takes those lessons seriously.
4. How does she regard beliefs that differ from hers? Is she tolerant, intolerant, curious, indifferent?
I'd say she's more curious about it than anything else. She'd like to know the why and the how of those beliefs, and she won't really speak up against it, unless she seems it as alarmingly harmful. Amalia's not fond of judging others.
5. What prejudices does she hold? Are they irrational or does she have a good reason for them?
... See the last sentence above. She might have thought that all rich people were snobby bitches/bastards, but has since gotten to know some of them, and can readily admit that they're not all bad. She's still wary around them, though.
Daily Life
1. What is the character's financial situation? Is she rich, poor, comfortable, in debt?
She manages! The family usually buys stuff in bulk to save money, and they're definitely not rich, but they're not dirt-poor either. Amalia has her own clothes now, after years of hand-me-downs.
2. What is her social status? Has this changed over time, and if so, how has the change affected her?
Kind of lower middle-class, but since her grandparents started out as poor immigrants and worked their way up, the situation's definitely improved. It was that way before she was born, but Amalia was raised with the ideals of working hard to get far in life, and not relying on anyone else spoiling or coddling you.
3. Where does she live? House, apartment, trailer? Is her home her castle or just a place to crash? What condition is it in? Does she share it with others?
They have a small house! But Amalia's been living at the dorms, so she hasn't been staying home very often, and when she does, she inevitably ends up babysitting for whichever set of parents feel like getting out for awhile.
4. Besides the basic necessities, what does she spend her money on?
Donating to various charities for the colorful bracelets they give you, colored thread so she can make her own, sporting equipment, the occasional article of clothing whenever Emi drags her shopping--
5. What does she do for a living? Is she good at it? Does she enjoy it, or would she rather be doing something else?
She's a student and she fights crime-- I mean what.
6. What are her interests or hobbies? How does she spend her free time?
She loves sports, and will be present at practically every kind of match for the school teams so she can cheer them on-- when she's not playing in her own matches, anyway. She'll jump into after-school games too, when she doesn't have practice. She likes reptiles and dogs, finds their certain characteristics to be fascinating, but she doesn't really mention it, so not too many people know about that one. Most of her free time is spent getting outside and seeing what there is to do on that particular day-- even if it's just studying. If she can find someone else to spend time with, she will.
Ama also really likes art, but has limited experience in it and is kind of embarrassed about that. On a random note, she likes to jumprope. :( Has an interest in cooking (and tasting), but usually burns herself too often to be good at it.
7. What are her eating habits? Does she skip meals, eat out, drink alcohol, avoid certain foods?
Dislikes bland foods, salsa is her best friend, and never skips meals. She's not too fond of milk, but there's rarely anything Amalia won't eat, and she's constantly sampling other people's lunches when they're kind enough to share. Because she can't cook, she eats out when the cafeteria's not available.
