Helps if it's still actually daylight, and they wander down the near end of their field, though, in contrast to previous parlous efforts with these equines, in Destructive Engagements passim.
Wasn't expecting the weather to be so nice today; forecast was distinctly meh, but it was latterly almost completely clear and sunny. Crucially, the weather held while I assimilated this intelligence, talked myself into making use of it, and faffed around quite a bit. Including watching The League of Gentlemen (the 1960 film, that is) on TV. Enjoyable, but a bizarre tonal mishmash of something that seems to not know if it's making an Ealing caper, or a hard-bitten crime drama. Jack Hawkins' voice, with somewhat hindsight, seems to hover between "immensely full of character" and "actually deeply unwell". Dicky Attenborough plays an officer type for once (all the main cast are ex-army, is the main premise), but still does his standard "cheeky chappy" routine of that era. Nigel Patrick (a name I couldn't have put to the pace) plays the exact same character he's played in any era I've seen him in.
Even affected some shades. Seemed a potentially almost immediately it got noticeably duller, as the sun picked about the only cloud in the sky to hide behind, but it clearer back up, and it was even a little glarey. Pretty standard route, out Curraheen Road, then Killumney direction. Hadn't really anticipated going on any further than K. Cross at most, but due to the weather and light holding (easy to forget how late in the year it is already, given the weather until very recently), and it must be said the highly sedate pace to that point, went on to the "next turn".
Blind bit of luck masquerading as preparedness: my front tyre's been looking in terrible shape for ages, and end of last week I eventually went into Kilgrew's, dropped twenty quid on a new one, and replaced it that evening. Amazed it lasted as long as it did, given that it was visibly bulging in a damaged spot, but definitely didn't want to take it someplace where blowout in Back O'Beyond was just waiting to happen. One annoying note: though I took my MP3 player and backup charger with me, I hadn't much charge in the player itself, and the backup seemed to crap out on me. Thought at the time it was because the batteries for that were flat, but it actually looks like it was a connector problem. Either way, no juice past Farran Cross, so the entire way back was choonsless. Rather dull, as it's not the most interesting part of the trip in the first place. Less dawdling, though, and got back from there in about an hour.
