What does it say about market research when suddenly Urban Outfitters is selling the striped off the shoulder t you wore last summer or the cut up "vintage" t-shirt you were inspired to create. "Indie" has become the punk rock of our generation. What started as a small group of devoted listeners has ( Read more... )

This happens with every subculture though. Hippies to Punks to Emo kids to Ravers to Yuppies. Everything becomes trendy at some point and then fades. People who were "indie" before it was "cool" aren't seen as any more individualistic or special. Chances are they just copied someone else who was older than them anyway. Like what you like, and who cares if it turns into mainstream or not. It doesn't make you avant-garde or better than anyone because you like a band before the rest of society does.

rachel for the most part your observations are absolutely correct. But they are correct based on the presumtion that you chose to listen. I dont believe this. You did not choose the music you love rachel. it chose you. Accepting this allows us to understand that the fact that the music is popular and has helped create certain social distinctions is trivial, if not entirely unconsequential. And if any more insipid irrational irksome introspection persists you need only ask yourself one question. Does the music still get you off? Not in a concise handjob kinda way, but does it rattle your soul? Does it make love to you? i think, rachel, that you can still answer yes to that question.

it's unfair that you use my name so often and you won't allow me to know yours...

the mountains outside my window make me think my name is meaningless. Someone named those mountains too, "rocky". Real clever huh? Why do we name mountains? Some possesive impulse i guess. Anyways if that wasnt a good enough clue i dont know what is.
