I'm curious as to what you guys think of all the talk about Matsuzaka. Here's a video I found of him on YouTube.

I wouldn't be happy if the Sox make this deal. 5/75 is ludicrous for a guy who hasn't proven himself in MLB. Additionally, it's a huge gamble - he's pretty young but has a lot of innings under his belt and there's a good chance he could be another Hideki Irabu or Hideo Nomo.

That's exactly how I feel about the guy. If someone wants to take a gamble on him then good for them. You have to figure it will take him a year or two to adjust to the majors though so you'd really only be paying for 4 productive years and that's if he ever does adjust. Luckily, it doesn't feel like Theo's style to seriously go after him. He may express interest to drive the bid price up for the Yankees though. I couldn't think of a worse place for him to go than New York. A whole fanbase expecting him to fix the Yankees problems of the past 6 years and bring them a World Series title while he has to adjust to the harder of the two leagues in one of baseball's toughest towns. How many pitching gambles that they've taken bringing guys in have actually worked out over the past few years?

He sure did. He had some great moments, including two no-hitters and at least one time leading the league in K's. But he was so inconsistent year to year and his big workload early in his career caught up with him so fast, that it wasn't worth any team signing him to a long-term big money contract - that's my point.

No way does he deserve 5/75... That's ridicolous.

He's not Roger Clemens, he doesn't deserve that type of money.

I hope the Yankees persue him. He's young, throws pretty hard, and has a variety of sick breaking pitches. Hideki Irabu was never projected to be that good. Even his numbers in Japan weren't very stellar. The only reason Steinbrenner acquired him was because he wanted Nomo and he couldn't have him. Hideo Nomo also didn't have that bad of an MLB career when you look at his numbers. He posted an ERA+ over 100 7 out of 11 major league seasons.

What do you think Matsuzaka's numbers would look like in NY?

I don't know. I think he'd be an above average starter from what his numbers look like.

His first year adjusting to the AL in NY? How can you justify paying over $21 million a year for "I don't know?"

I don't think anyone deserves those kind of numbers without seeing major league hitting.

Matsui and Ichiro have proved they are worth it...Nomo and Irabu, not so much. While it's a small sample, I'm more inclined to think hitters can translate but pitchers require more effort.

Also, $105M for 5 years? No way. Someone else can take that risk. We need to grow some talent in the farm, maybe trade Sheff for a proven 1 guy or sign Zito. Johnson and Mussina are not good enough any more to be 1-2 and Wang is a 2 starter at best in my book.

Also, I think if the Yankees say "pass" then that will drive his cost down somewhat. $33M for bidding rights pretty much looks like a price driven by thinking the Yankees and maybe the Mets will fight for him.
