I don't remember the lady I was with but she was pretty awesome.
Was it the older woman named Karen? I've KNOW I've seen her before, but I forget where (I mean, it must have been some other tournament a few years ago or something).
All I tired was uchi mata
Freudian slip? But yeah, you should totally have dominated this guy if you were 100% healthy and would still have outscored him this time if you'd stalled majorly for those last twenty seconds.
He tried some bad choke on me and lifted up too high, I blocked the choke then turned him over for the pin. I felt bad beating him, since he had just lost by pin, but whatever. I told him later how he could have gotten me with the choke.
Yeah, you took that second guy to "What not to do in newaza" school. Once you had him pinned, after about ten seconds he just kind of gave up, which was a bit disappointing, but whatever.
I was also enrolled in the senior mens 100+ kg. That meant I was fighting blackbelts and... the huge guy. I rushed over to fight probably the nicest guy in the tournament. He got me with a koka, and slapped an armbar on me before I could lock up. He bent my finger nail back and cracked my elbow joint a bit, but other than that he was cool. He got a pretty clean win off me so I don't think I could have beaten him of the conditions were better.
He kind of slipped up when he initially went for the armbar, and I thought it might be a repeat of the last match and you'd turn him over for a pin, but then he locked it on. He was definitely skilled. I thought it was funny, though, that he regretted going into the heaviest division because he had to fight big guys. What was he expecting? Everyone else weighing in at 103 kilos like him?
He was bigger than everyone, but not taller. He had no standing game and almost immediately I got him with a de ashi harai. But instead of throwing him I just kind of pushed him away and he fell for a yuko. He didn't let me get away with it again, but most of the match revolved around me trying a throw or him trying a throw and it not working, then him trying to turn me over. He got me pinned twice and I escaped both times, before something kind of shitty happened. Towards the end of the match I went in for a throw and somehow my knee got bent in.
After you got the yuko, I remember you pretty much only trying on throw. It wasn't deashi harai, though. You were turning so that your back was almost facing him and you were reaching for his left leg. It looked like you might have been going for sukui nage or maybe some kind of sacrifice throw. I couldn't tell, because he just kept seeing it coming and pushing you down then trying to roll you over for a pin.
He was pretty cool, but I had a good chance of beating him now that I think about it. I got him with a koka, and he got a turn over and a pin, but I just rushed out of bounds. Later I got him with what I thought was at least Wazari on a Ko Uchi gari, but it was only Yuko, but I was still leading. Then he got me with Tani Otoshi from pure strength for Ippon and I lost but whatever. If I wasn't so careless I could have beaten him. I'm sure of it.
Yeah, I was waiting for a good opportunity to take a picture during that fight. There were some moments that were close. I was glad you were so close to the outside boundary when he got you in that pin.
So then I fought the huge guy. He got a good Uchi mata makikomi on me and I lost. There wasn't too much I could have done against that guy. If I wasn't so tired and had more confidence, I probably could have stalled for ground work, but that's about it.
So that guy was huge. I won't pretend otherwise. I was interested to see how people would do against him, so I watched all of his matches and I think you were the only other person whose matches I watched all of (actually, there was probably one other person I think, but that was a coincidence). I think the reasons he did so well were: he was very skilled, his size intimidated every single one of his opponents, a lot of the weight advantage he had was in muscle, and he was fucking huge. But that last one might have actually been the least important.
Oh, and he did pin you after the throw, so I think that the throw was for wazari.
Overall, I think if you hadn't been sick or injured, the only people you might not have beaten would have been the huge guy, the guy who armbarred you, and the older blackbelt who threw you on your head. And you should have stood a much better than even chance against the older guy.
The first throw I did to him was de ashi harai. It was a foot sweep on his right leg, and I wasn't far enough to his side for it to be ko soto. I ended up pushing him away when I realized I wouldn't get it, but yeah it was totally only there for a second.
Later on I was just seeing if he'd give me his leg, and if he had, I probably would have done Sukui. For the most part the turning was trying to get him off balance for Uchi Mata.
Did you see June sensei in my corner ever? The little guy who kept telling me to go for a high grip?
I don't know. I probably saw him at some point. But I don't particularly remember anyone telling you to go for a high grip. And unless he was all, "Nick Prescott: you must go for a high grip now!" I probably wouldn't even have even noticed what he was saying because there were so many other people saying so many other things...
