Tonight I went to the advanced class at Emerald city dojo. I had to show up late, but still got in about an hour of practice. They coach is this little guy, but has a pretty good attitude. My experience with little guy coaches hasn't been the best, besides Uchida.
There are a lot of bigger guys there (Yes), with varying degrees of skill. The biggest is actually the most advanced there. He's probably 250-275 lbs, and a black belt. He's actually going to be great for me to work with because his level isn't SO much higher that I wont learn anything, but he's challenging enough to keep me on my toes.
He stood out of the first randori, so I got to fight this smaller guy (maybe 185 lbs). The first thing I did was get him with a minor foot sweep (Kosoto Gari), and the blackbelt totally started laughing. As he watched us fight he totally noticed the smaller guy had no defense on footsweeps besides stalling. He tried to foot sweep me, but lacked the off balance and timing, so I'd just counter. The next round the big guy and the smaller brown belt went at it, and the black belt kept on him with foot sweeps. I could tell he wasn't that up to date with them, but he was putting on the pressure. I stepped in against him, and found out he loves setting up for a sacrifice throw I want to work on (Tawara Gaeshi). He's messing with it I think, because I nearly caught him with a sloppy hand technique (Kata Guruma).
Turns out none of the dojo works on footsweeps. Perfect for me because that's like 90% of my attacks. AWESOME.
I'm slowly getting back to my old techniques. My most used techniques are Kosoto Gari, Kouchi Gari, Osoto Gari, Oguruma, Sukui Nage, and Tani Otoshi. I'm trying to move Kata Guruma and probably Uchi Mata in there more. Uchi Mata is a great technique, but if I can improve my O Guruma I'll stick with that. I'd love to get my Kata Guruma up, and I'm pretty sure I can. I should work on adding to my foot sweeps with stuff like Hiza guruma, Sasae tsurikomi ashi, and Deashi Harai.
Ok, so at this point, the only person reading is Stephen. Good job.
