Honestly speaking, virtually any form of data gathering has the potential to be trouble-free provided you don't get caught. I'm not going to go into specific detail about my own work because it's top secret, but on the whole I tend to keep my own data gathering rather low-tech. To be fair, this is mainly due to budgetary constraints, but I would miss my notebooks if I didn't have them.

But I'm getting ahead of myself. Before you begin gathering any data, you should consider the question of why you are gathering said data. What goal do you hope to achieve?

Very well, Dan. It appears to me that your data gathering motives are pure. Before we begin there are a few supplies you will need to obtain, such as a decent sized notebook and pencils. Also, how are you at math?
