Yeah well... that's it. Germany 0, Italy 2... the dream of the world cup championship, bursted in the last two minutes of a 120 minutes game... and what a great game. It was very exciting, two vey strong teams, but the Italian team simply had more resources in the end. They deserve their success just like Germany would have had. It's kinda ( Read more... )

It's great that Germany can do patriotism properly, focussing on the things that actually bring them together as a people. I'm afraid I'm a little soured when it comes to the subject; over here, 'patriotism' usually involves a kind of false, enforced sense of togetherness, as though shouting drunkenly about St. George and 'Eng-ger-land' (and glassing those who don't share your inebriated enthusiasm) somehow represents good old-fashioned Britishness and is something that all right-thinking Subjects of Her Majesty should aspire to.

However, I don't think you need to feel guilty at all... all scars heal, given time. I don't think people will forget the mistakes made - the fact that Hitler practically made himself the poster child for Evil will see to that - but as time passes and more and more contact is made, people will see that that had nothing to do with the country, and everything to do with the attitudes involved. The German students I've spoken to have always been really nice, approachable people; your generation is doing a fine job of going out and showing, by direct action, how different Germany is now, and how much you have to be proud of.

*noddles and hugs tightly* Thanks. :) I know there are many people like you who are free of any prejudices and know not to judge people by their nationality.
... and I can imagine what you mean by English "patriotism"... it was indeed quite impressive to see all the English fans root for their team and listening to a whole stadium singing "Rule Britannia" send shivers down my spine... but there's always a fine line. Some people overdo it... but you have people like that on every side.

*huggles* I hope I'll catch you on AIM sometime soon. I'll just try to IM you by chance. ;)
