I have a preference for a hatchback, either two or four dour (and preferably a square/90 degree hatch back, not the slopey kind). Also, is there a difference between rebuilding the engine, and rebuilding the engine HEAD? Also.. is it probably okay if the car has over 100K mileage, but the engine has significantly less ( Read more... )

I have used Beetles for daily drivers, along with my father since he was a kid...and they stand better than ...85-90% of everything I have owned - And I have owned more cars than I am old. I truely think ruleing out something like this because of whatever reason is silly. The economy is awesome, reliabilty is awesome, and VW mechanics litter this state more than chicken pox on a 5 y/o kid! Let alone, the mechanic I suggest she go to (if she happens to end up with a VW) Bow-Wow...which has been around, for unknown time...they are reasonablely priced, ran by enthusiasts for the enthusiast and daily driver. I have worked with them for years, and every one of the mechanics and shop workers (even the owners) drive classic VWs and other german/italian and british vehicles as daily drivers.

Washington State is AWESOME for Classic Cars as daily drivers, as we have a AWESOME selection of Specialy Repair Shops (pretty much all "small time" Mechanics are ONLY specialty shops here). With this in mind, it makes it easier to maintain the oldies like you would any other "newer" vehicle.

And no offence to newer cars, but I never had my oldies break down as many times as my newer ones! And even my newer ones were DAMN good too (Yay Ford and Saturn!). Infact...I have never had any of my oldies break down. Never.

I grew up around VWs so I have only restored VWs. But I have helped with some 'Stangs of various years and types, MG, '77 Porsche 911,'71 Ford F-Series truck...

I started the process on restoring a Disney Original 1976 Lancia Scorpion Pininfarina "mini ferrari", but because of health issues I might be selling soon :( Such a shame too, as its the car of my dreams, and only 2 (rumored 3) are left in the world of this type! :\ ~points to icon~

Dang that is a rare car, Lancia. Is there no way you can keep it?

Not unless someone wants to be super cool and pay for storage for me until I get my current project of restoreing my current Beetle, Bryn. 3:

Well then I should move out to Washington state, because around here in Raleigh, people don't know crap. I rebuilt the 5.0 in my 89 Town Car with mustang parts and nobody will touch it around here. If the mechanical support is there, go for a classic! By all means better than the newer crap OBDII check engine lights..

The West Coast is all about Cars, especially in Cali and Washington - If ya like cars? This *is* the place to be ;)

No one would touch your 5-0?! WHAT? You're kidding! That would sell like Hot Cakes here, or Cali...no joke either.

yeah everyone gets scared off when I tell them it has a Mustang cam, Mark VII computer, 19lb injectors. I found 1 place that would work on it because it would not start no matter what I did [ended up being the timing]. But I want to fly out there and get me a rust free 89 Acura Integra :)

You'll find a lot of Japanese imports out here have been Riced out. Street racing is HUGE over here, the worst being in San Diego, parts of SoCal, and south of Seattle. So they can be a bit dodgy out here, but they are here :)

Its common to find Washingtonians owning multiple cars per person LMAO

I want myself a Hudson Wasp or Hornet (I got a think for ol' Racers...heehee)...MAYBE SOME DAY!! ;)

Must restore my current car first. D'oh x.x
