Dave, oh, Dave. You're a cool man, and very conscientious of the animals' well-being. But as a DVM, shouldn't you know to read the specific instructions for a bordetella vacc? It says right on the vial to give the first dose nasally--only the booster ought to be given subQ.
So essentially, poor Kiwi has suffered a night in ICU, quite needlessly, because someone I trusted didn't RTFM. He apologized.. but I kinda feel like some compensation is owed, you know? Monetary would be nice, as I'm looking at a $200 bill ._.
At least by 11pm, Kiwi was beginning to show interest in her surrounding, and her usual liveliness again. Not fully restored, but much, much better than the depressed, lethargic, tremory pug from before.
Tonight was pretty frikken slow, which worked well to my advantage, as I got to bug Kevin about learning stuff. Since Kiwi is conveniently mine, and I got to treat her, Kevin supervised me while I ran her ISTAT and PCV (ISTAT measures the different blood values..glucose, potassium, etc) and PCV is the pack cell volume, or the amount of red blood cells. The first is just a blood sample read by a machine, and for the second involves separating the red blood cells from the plasma via centrifuge.
Next, he taught me how to enter charges (where I found out how much this thing is gonna cost me--and holy shit, why do IV catheters cost $50? and those little T-port things I assemble? $30!) and print out patient IDs.
Annnnd.. *drumroll* I learned two things I've really been wanting to learn. How to measure heart rate and take a blood pressure. Took a while to get the hang of the doppler system, but by the time I left this evening, I got Kiwi's bp spot on (and she lay obligingly upside down in my lap, hah).
*whew* I am (emotionally) tired, after staying late at work, and the stress of Kiwi. I'm gonna eat and crawl in bed til morning... z_z
