i know that for people who live in places that aren't Ojai, thunderstorms during the summer are rather commonplace. I detected that when I was in Boston a couple years ago and the whole place was a live wire with fury and wind and rain, and I was the only one who was a bit surprised.
That said, last night was pretty cool. I went to bed at 12, seeing flashes and hearing subdued thunder from the east end. At 2, I woke up just before my brother, concerned with my cat, asked where she could be. My sister texted me right then, through the strobes and violent anger of clouds: "We are [in] the middle of an amazing thunderstorm right now. lightning everywhere!," then: "It's so cool. and then as i was watching the sky a big tarantula crawled down my arm!"
Tim and I sat on my failed wheeled couch experiment and watched the storm above (and around) us. It started to rain, I grabbed a hoodie and he grabbed a blanket. We sat until the rain was too much. Soaked to the bone, I crawled back into bed to my cat's scared screaming: "why would you leave me in here! It's scary!"
So I told Abby about lightning in even tones, singing a little while the room lit up in huge flashes and while we could still feel the sound through the walls, through our bones. She seemed placated (at least, not as scared), and I went to sleep at about 3am.
Some coworkers and friends got pictures, and one guy even saw lightning strike a tree, which then caught fire. So intense and unexpected an end for a weird day!
zonk!
