SPN Season 4 Recap

Nov 22, 2009 19:34

To be honest, this was the first season of SPN I saw due to cugami's suggestion. GOOD THING TOO because I feel it's the strongest of the four and held me through Season 2. I feel this is the strongest season because it has one-and-a-half years worth of plotting and planning instead of the usual one (thanks, Writer's Strike!) and the last season just cleaned the plate. Season 3 had no leftover plot lines, but a lot of questions, a lot of room for new stuff. Good thing, too because they introduced ANGELS. Pretty things that tend to be pretty aggressive and non-cherubic. I'm spoiling and spilling so I might as well get on with the cut.

As I was saying before, this season moved in different direction. The angst was dialed down but the boys were still divided. Not by each other, but by religion and the Apocalypse. I'll admit Misha Collin's presence made the whole show SO MUCH BETTER because there was finally some slash I could jump on board with. See, having three seasons of two brothers in a car creates a lot of incest. I don't like incest, so adding an angel for Dean? I'M SO THERE.

Ruby? She's alright. She seemed a little too demon-y telling Sam to beef up on demon blood. I think she got Doctor Who'd (New body, new personality). Even though she shouldn't because she's just possessing a different girl.

Angels? BIG DICKS. Well, except for Castiel (played by Misha Collins) and that's what makes him endearing. :D

OH MAN, the ending? Supernatural hasn't given us a good shocker since the first season. GOOD JOB, Y'ALL!

Funniest: "The Monster at the End of This Book"
Oh, "Yellow Fever" was such a close contender with a giant, suicidal teddy bear and Jensen Ackles rocking it out to Eye of the Tiger. But the first ten minutes of this one were too funny to pass up. Besides, I'm a sucker for funny ones that manage to mean something and tie into the main plot. And the boys discover slash fans. BEST SCENE, HANDS DOWN.

Scariest: "Family Remains"
In-bred, feral twins that like to eat people? Frakkin' scary guys. Single scariest moment? When the salt line didn't work. I had a feeling the girl was the baby, but having a brother and the grandfather be the father? FFFFF TOO SCARY.

Kookiest: "It's a Terrible Life"
So super angel mojo is used to turn Dean into a 'no-carb' sales man with suspenders. :D And then Sam is just the grunt tech helper. SO STRANGE, YET SO AWESOME. ALSO: Return of the Ghostfacers.

Most Pop-Cultured: "Monster Movie"
I admit to struggling for a reason to list this, but it's just amazing. Shot in Black & White and full of Monster Movie homages, this was one of the funner episodes. Oh, and Dean trying to get De-Re-Hymenated? Oh, DEAN.

Best Guest Star: Brock Kelly
This guy nailed, NAILED being Young Dean. The swagger, mannerisms, and the voice. IMPRESSIVE. And looking a helluva lot like Jensen Ackles helped convince me he really was a younger Dean.

Best Dean-hookup: Anna
Bar-wench who possibly de-hymenated Dean woulda won if it was a solid confirmation they did it. But we don't know so Anna the Angel shagging Dean in the Impala a la Titanic? Classy. SRSLY, Dean's NEVER this classy.

TIME TRAVEL! TRAGIC!: "In the Beginning"
I like tragic time travel stories. Especially ones where you go to the past and your actions are neccesary to shape the present, i.e. you HAVE TO go back in time to make sure now happens. Or whatever you do doesn't really change the outcome. It's similar to those self-fulfilling prophecies. I like those. Real humbling.
Anyways, this one involves Dean travelling back in time to meet his parents. It's tragic because his attempt to kill the yellow-eyed demon failed and brought attention to his mum (who dies at the hands of the aforementined yellow-eyed demon).

YAY, MISHA COLLINS: "The Rapture"
This time he wasn't just an incidental character, but the star of the episode. This really displayed his acting chops, showing he not only acts not only with his voice, but his face and body language, too. It completely changed when he was Jimmy. And he finally took off the Constantine-esque coat. SHEESH.

Made me cry the most: "On the Head of a Pin"
OH NOES, CAS. WHY MUST YOU BREAK DEAN? Yeah, Cas asking Dean to torture for information and his heartache at asking Dean. :/ BROKE MY FANGIRL HEART. Then it got worse when Alistair (the tortured guy) revealed Dean started the whole Apocalypse mess in Hell. :/ Poor boys. Accidentally breaking the first and last seals with out even knowing.
Oh, and by the by, if folks (aka other hunters on the show) want to blame Sam for this, they should really look at Dean. Dean broke the first seal by torturing people in hell (and mildly enjoying it). Sam broke the last seal by killing a demon. Both didn't know they WERE breaking seals, so if we ignore that fact, killing a demon is what ANY hunter would do. Torturing people in hell? Er, yeah, that's not right. :/

Down-right BEST: "Lazarus Rising"
Dean crawling out of the grave? What a way to start the season. Like, WHOA. WHOA. cugami has a bloody amazing representation of Cas pulling Dean out of hell, too. Back to the episode. It ended with an even bigger bang with Castiel (Misha Collins!) revealing he was an ANGEL. An ANGEL that "raised [Dean] from perdition," and did so BECAUSE GOD TOLD HIM TO. :D

Overall, this was an EXCELLENT season. I enjoyed every episode and can't really knock any of them down. It was really hard to hilight only a few episodes. :/ What's really surprising is I made it through a full season in a few days. Usually with American shows I watch half a dozen episodes then resume later. NOT THIS TIME.

So yeah, after all this rambling about Supernatural, are you convinced to watch it yet?
