That was a TERRIBLE midterm. One hour to write an essay and I totally FAILED. I can't believe I'd write an essay in half-an-hour in high school. I started getting post exam shakes from the adrenaline drop. It was pretty bad because I haven't had those in awhile. A looong while. :/
The good news, however, is my next English assignment. No, not the research essay, one before that. I get to learn about libraries. How? SCAVENGER HUNT. My inner librarian is just oodling with freakin joy. And apparently my University owns ~7 million books and periodicals. That's excluding digital stuff and NEOS (NEOS allows universities and colleges across the province to share physical resources). We're #2 in Canada and in the top 50 world wide. :D
OH LOOK. Building suggestions. Excuse me while I geek out.
Errr.. skipping to yesterday, there was a four-car crash on the highway. Not pretty. That delayed me about 40 min, tripling my commute this morning. Dhiraj, the buddy I carpool with, heard about a new radio station (as if Edmonton needed any more!) that's playing continuous 'hit' music. HOT 107(.1). I find the song selection varies little from the Bounce, but they pledge to NEVER play Nickleback and lack irritating DJs. I suppose I listen to this for now.
Okay, here's for the fun stuff: FEIST. I've previously admitted I love her voice. That woman has this deep, scratchy quality that makes her equally mesmerizing and abrasive. When you add the music, however, the abrasive quality is subdued and you get some great stuff. And that's just the music.
Feist's music videos are wholesome, whimsical pieces that revive my hopes for music videos. After the fiasco at the MTV video Awards (no, I'm not talking about Kanye interrupting Taylor Swift; I'm talking about the giant hoop-a-haw about Beyonce's video. It's unimpressive, sexist and unoriginal. I can point to at least three other videos that do the exact same thing. Beyonce, two back up dancers, hip jaggling, lame angles and choppy editing.), I've been surly and overly crude about music videos. But when you watch Patrick Daughter's videos, you can't help but to smile. He takes the essence of the song and visualizes it in a funky, exciting, unique but accessible (I cannot stress this enough), and whimsical manner. The best part about Feist is that I WATCH her videos. Most artists I just watch for about thirty seconds and then just let the music play while I do something else. For me, YouTube is the inconveniently doppelganger of Pandora.
For the longest time,
"My Moon, My Man" was my favourite Feist song/video. She's originally a dancer, and this OK GO inspired piece makes airports fun again. Oooh, and there are mood lights. A close contender was "Inside and Out," a cover of the Bee Gees. I love this mainly because the editing is so smooth. It wasn't until recently I watched "1234" in its entirety that I found the best video/song yet:
"One Evening." Guest-starring Buck 65, this is the most squee-worthy music video since A-ha's "Take On Me." Well, at least for me. I love that Buck 65 is a sexy gorgeous gruffy guy dancing a little choppier than Feist, showing a bit of his hip-hop roots. The interaction between them is distant, but passionate. They rarely come into contact, and when they do it is still very strained. And the kisses goodbye at the end are so forced and formal. OH AND HE TURNS INTO A STICK MAN IN THE END. *squees*
But do you know what's even more fun than intellectual and lovable music videos? Chillin' with some friends. I rarely do this now because I'm working, but today was my off-day and I spent lunch on campus. Met up with Gabe, Ozair and most of the gang. We spun pennies for a good 20 minutes, trying to one-up each other. Don't ask, we're just some nerdy engineers, kay? There were also name-slips, comic-con plans and jello. Least I had jello.
I'm watching Supernatural now, so it seems like a good time to end. I'm not even done the pilot and I'm loving the banter.
