“Good morning sweetie.”

“Good morning Doctor Lee.” A pale looking kid stood before him. He was smiling nervously, fear taking over the child’s body. A tall boy suddenly appeared behind him, placing an arm around the kid’s small shoulder.

“Are you ready sweetheart?” Junho asked, squatting down facing the kid on the face.

“I... I don’t think so.” The kid answered, fidgeting his fingers anxiously.

He chuckled, ruffling the kid’s soft hair. “Relax, Joonie-ah. Everything will be alright.”

Junho straightened, “You can wait us here Mr. Lee Joon.” The tall boy nodded. He turned to face the kid who was now clinging on his legs.

“Relax baby. Just what like Doctor Lee said, everything would be alright okay? Appa will wait here for you.” He pecked the kid’s cheeks. “Joonie hwaiting!”

“Sit here Joonie-ah.” The kid climbed on the reclining chair, lying down flat against it. He adjusted the chair, adjusting it in a more comfortable position. He stood up, reaching the white latex gloves as he started slipping it into his hands.

“Doctor Lee, d-does it hurt?” Joonie asked nervously, lying stiff on the chair.

“Just a bit sweetheart, only when I inject the anaesthesia.” He slipped the second glove on his left hand, “It’s like a bite of an ant, after that, you won’t feel anything.” He smiled, wearing his facemask and buttoning his lab gown.

Five years had already passed since he started his own clinic and thankfully, it was successful. He was afraid that time, because he just graduated in Dentistry and does not have any experience yet. He felt like his teeth, gums and tongue were all aching, and he do not know what to do. Luckily, his parents supported him all throughout the way; from the money where he used for building his own clinic until it was fully established.

He decided to make it a clinic for kids because of Nuneo. The first month made him felt like giving up, taking care of his own son and attending on the patients simultaneously was hard and tiring. However, he did not surrender, because he needs to make living and give Nuneo a better life.

He doesn’t want to depend on his parents, knowing that it was his fault of having a son in an early age. It was a mistake, a mistake wherein he believed in a broken promise, by an idiot that he loved. That idiot who left him, saying that he wanted to pursue his dreams and he wasn’t yet ready to have a commitment and having a boyfriend is just a bother.

He was ready to end his life actually, if it is not because of his friends. They aided him on everything, helped him picking up the broken pieces. He spent the nights in his room crying, blaming himself for being a stupid.

Until Nuneo came out, everything changed. He went back on being a happy and cheerful person again, forgetting everything including the reason why Nuneo was here sleeping peacefully on his arms. He promised to himself that he would be a good umma, making Nuneo as his inspiration. And that made him finished his studies with very good remarks. His parents were so proud of him despite the obstacles he was facing, embracing Nuneo as their grandson.

Five years after, he, Lee Junho, was now a respected and highly recommended dentist for kids. All the sacrifices he did in the past, the pain and struggles, it was all worth it.

Junho grabbed all the things he needed and faced the trembling kid. He smiled, caressing his cheeks. “Relax Joonie-ah.” The small boy nodded, managing to smile a bit.

“Remember, it’s just like a bite of an ant. Don’t worry okay?”

“O-Okay...”

He took the injection, placing it towards the small boy’s mouth. “Say Aaahh.”

Nuneo rested his chin on his palm. This class was getting boring as time passes by. The new teacher, err... Teacher Hwang, according to Yeonnie, was getting on his nerves bit by bit. This was not the replacement teacher he was expecting.

In his first week of teaching, Nuneo spared the life of this red haired teacher. He observed his every move, words, and gestures meticulously. His eyes may be small, but everything, everyone, can’t pass by in front of those tiny pair of slits without inspecting every angle carefully.

“.. So this is what dinosaur looks like....” He heard the tall man spoke in front.

He gave Teacher Hwang another chance to prove himself a cheerful and understanding grade school teacher. This was his first time adjusting his patience a little higher to accommodate the new teacher. Of course, his patience is overflowing for his lovely umma and his bestfriend Yeonnie. However, he can’t really make himself patient enough to other people.

He sighed as his eyes followed the sloppy movements of Teacher Hwang. He can tell that this young man is somewhat distracted and preoccupied. Something was bothering him, he thought.

Nuneo looked on his right, staring at Yeonnie, who was listening to the lesson attentively looking interested. For some reasons, he really felt lucky that he was his best friend, and his umma are good friends with Yeonnie’s parents too. Just like him, Yeonnie was also a smart kiddo. They are the reincarnation of Albert Einstein and Pythagoras, according to his Taecyeon ahjussi.

Finally, Nuneo made his own conclusion. Teacher Fei’s first day of teaching beats Teacher Hwang’s first week. HOORAY! He obliviously threw his hands on the air as a celebration for his genius conclusion. The tiny act wasn’t missed by the tall man in front who turned his head towards the kids at that moment. His brows furrowed, but decided to take heed to the small yet weird action. (Weird because Nuneo raised both of his hands.)

“Yes cute boy with the red hair!” Chansung spoke, a forced cheerfulness hinted his voice. He pointed his right arm to Nuneo.

Nuneo stopped on his tracks, suspending both of his hands on the mid-air. He looked around, noticing the curious looks from his classmates. He slowly slid down his short arms, hoping that no one would notice him. But it was too late. He saw teacher Hwang heading towards him.

Chansung stopped beside the red haired kid, lowering his head to face him. Nuneo felt a nudge and he saw Yeonnie looking at him. He looked at his teacher, and his eyes widened.

Nuneo felt like he was looking at the mirror. The lips, ears, nose, hair, were all the same except for... yeah. The eyes. Nuneo rolled his eyes mentally.

“I saw you raised your hand sweetie. Is there something you want to ask?” Chansung asked gently, offering his sweet smile to the kid.

Nuneo gulped nervously, “I didn’t raise my hands teacher.”

The tall man chuckled, “You did sweetie, just now.”

The kid felt irritated at the ‘sweetie’ and that pushed him on the edge. “I didn’t teacher. I was just stretching my arms because it was so boring.” Nuneo retorted frankly. Like his umma, being a straightforward person was one of his qualities.

He heard soft gasps from his classmates, and Yeonnie elbowed him hard. He ignored everyone, including the ‘what-the-fuck’ face of Teacher Hwang. He was just stating what he feels, and that’s what his umma taught him.

To save his best friend from embarrassment and humiliation, Yeonnie decided to butt in.

“I’m really sorry for what my best friend had said teacher, he didn’t mean it.” He nudged Nuneo. “Right Nuneo?”

“No! I meant what I said. And I’m not taking it back.” Yeonnie flinched at the sudden outburst of his best friend, pinching him on the cheeks mentally.

Silence. Chansung was taken aback by the kid’s words, yet admiring him for his bluntness. He must admit, it was really boring. Even he himself was getting itchy at his stiff way of his teaching. Well he was not like this, but something bothers him that even his superb teaching skills were getting affected. He can’t explain why, but something, rather someone, was haunting him.

Everyone was staring at Nuneo, Yeonnie, and Teacher Hwang. The former was meeting the intense yet gentle gaze of the latter, proving that he really meant what he said. After a minute of shooting invisible lasers, Chansung smiled, he knew that fighting with kids is immature, and pointless.

“I suppose your name is Nuneo..”

“Yeah.” He felt Yeonnie elbowed him, “Y-Yes.. Teacher Hwang.”

The tall man chuckled, “You’re such a smart kid, Nuneo.” He stood up, ruffling the red haired kid’s hair. There is something with this kid that made him feel connected with someone, but he can’t figure out who. He was being paranoid again. He slapped himself mentally.

“Okay, let’s resume. Where were we?”

Nuneo slumped against the table the moment Teacher Hwang walked in front to continue the discussion. He’ll tell this to his umma.

Really.

*

Junho smiled as he removed his facemask. He glanced at the clock, 12:30. Time to fetch Nuneo. He removed his lab gown, when suddenly his phone rang. He turned around at the loud, and reached the phone from his table.

“Yoboseyo?”

“Junhooooo.” Wooyoung whined on the other line.

“Wooyoung?” Junho asked, wondering if that’s really Wooyoung he’s speaking to.

“Junhoooo.. Myteethishaching.” Junho didn’t understood any word except for the long ‘Junhooooo’.

“What? I can’t understand you Wooyoung.” Wooyoung whined loudly this time, which bothered Junho.

“Junho, are you still there in your clinic?” Nichkhun suddenly spoke, which made him jump.

“Ah.. yeah? Why?” He sat on his chair.

“Good. Wait for us there okay?” The other suddenly hung up before Junho could even answer.

*

“What happened?” Junho asked worriedly, as he looked at Wooyoung who was covering his mouth with a handkerchief.

“His tooth was aching since this morning. I thought you could help him.” Nichkhun’s voice was full of concern, hugging the small tight in his arms. They were sitting inside Junho’s office.

Junho’s brows furrowed, “And what’s the reason behind this sudden toothache?”

“Ahm.. We had a date yesterday and he ate 2 gallons of ice cream, 3 large cotton candies, and 8 lollipops, all by himself. I tried to stop him but he really looks cute while eating that’s why...”

“Hyung! Are you out of your mind?” Junho slammed his hands on the table, interrupting Nichkhun. “You made Wooyoung eat those sweet foods! You know how much he loves that, especially ice cream. I know you were just being sweet and all, but please moderate him.” Junho reprimanded, turning his head to the whimpering boy.

“And you! How many times did I told you that you should not eat sweets too much? Look what happened now, and cotton candies? Lollipops? Really, Wooyoung? My clinic is for kids, not for adults who think like a kid.” Junho scolded, gripping his phone tightly.

Wooyoung whined even more, burying his head under his boyfriend’s broad chest.

“I’m shorryJunho..”

“Well, it’s not like your teeth will go back to normal with my scolding.. Fine. I’ll remove that decayed teeth. Just promise you’ll not eat too much sweets, do you understand?” Wooyoung nodded.

Junho turned to Nichkhun, “Hyung, can you fetch Nuneo?”

“Yes yes, no problem.” He slowly pushed himself away from Wooyoung. “I’ll be right back baby. Just stay here with Junho okay? Everything will be alright.” He kissed the smaller boy’s forehead who kissed back on his lips.

“Junho.. D-Does it hurt?” Wooyoung was now lying on the reclining chair, looking terrified at the big scissors and injection in front of him. This was his first time going in a clinic since he was seven years old.

“Of course. It’s like a bite of a dinosaur.” Wooyoung suddenly broke into tears, which made Junho worried. He didn’t know Wooyoung will be scared like this. He laughed mentally.

“Relax. I was just kidding okay? You won’t feel anything ‘cause I’ll be putting anaesthesia.” He prepared the numbing substance on the syringe.

“Say Aaaahhh."

*

“Shit!” Nichkhun slammed his hands on the steering wheel, looking irritated. Twenty minutes had already passed and yet he was still stuck in this heavy traffic. He glanced at his wristwatch, cursing as he was very sure that Nuneo was waiting for his umma by now. Nuneo isn’t the type of kid who waits.

Desperate on getting into the school as much as he can, he jumped out from his car, placing early warning device both in front and at the back. Giving his dear car a once over, he dashed out on the streets and started running.

*

Nuneo sighed as he sat on the bench. It was already twenty minutes since their class dismissed. And it was also twenty minutes since he sat there waiting for his umma. Junho umma never failed to fetch him late, that’s why it made him irritated.

Now he regretted on refusing his Junsu ahjussi on his offer on taking him into his umma’s clinic. Yeonnie told him earlier in their class that they will go to mall today to celebrate Taecyeon’s ahjussi’s promotion from being a manager to supervisor. He doesn’t want to disturb their get together that’s why he refused.

“Hi sweetie. Waiting for someone?”

Nuneo suddenly turned around at the voice behind him. He saw Teacher Hwang smiling at him.

“I’m waiting for my umma.” He non-chillingly answered, as he remembered their encounter a while ago.

“Oh. Can I talk you Nuneo?”

“Why?” Chansung was taken aback, but still, he went on.

“Well, your umma is still not here, and I’m having my lunch alone, so I thought we can talk..” Chansung nervously laughed, scratching the back of his head.

Nuneo thought for a moment. Umma said I shouldn’t talk to strangers. But Teacher Hwang is not a stranger, because he’s my teacher. “Okay.” He jumped, ‘So where is your office?”

*

Have a sit Nuneo. Chansung guided the small kid on the seat in front of his table. Nuneo looked around, somehow amazed by the childish decorations. His eyes roamed until it landed on a pink basket where something yellow was resting there.

“Oh bananas!” Chansung jumped, looking at the small kid, “Can I have them teacher?”

Chansung creased a brow, “Of course!” He smiled, pushing the pink basket.

Nuneo plucked one, peeling at hastily. Chansung smiled when his cheeks puffed while munching the banana, he looks so cute.

“So, how old are you Nuneo?”

“Six.” Nuneo was busy munching he didn’t bother to answer fully.

“Oh. Is your hair natural?” Chansung wanted to kick himself for asking stupid questions.

“Of course. Umma won’t allow me to dye my hair. How about yours?”

Chansung chuckled. He never saw a kid as witty and clever like Nuneo in his entire life. He was amazed by the fact that he was just a six year old kid.

“Yes. It’s natural too.”

Nuneo munched the last bits of his banana but he was still craving for more. “Can I still have one, teacher?”

“You can have as much as you want, Nuneo.” Chansung laughed. “I never thought you also love banana.”

“Yeah. I love dried mangoes too.” Chansung choked. Dried mangoes? Along with bananas, dried mangoes is also his favourite food.

“Ahm.. teacher, I just want to say sorry for my rude behaviour earlier in the class. I didn’t mean to offend you but, I was just stating my feelings. It was really boring.” Nuneo genuinely admitted, snapping Chansung out of his thoughts.

“Oh. It’s okay Nuneo, no problem. I’m glad you told me what you really feel.” Chansung widened his eyes as he saw Nuneo eating the last banana. No one left for him, except for the peelings.

“Thanks teacher. I just hope you’ll improve your teaching skills in the next weeks coming. We’re kids, so we want to play. I hope you’ll create some materials and cute visuals for us. And I hope we can watch movies like what Teacher Fei always do to make us inspired and motivated.”

Chansung clapped inwardly, amazed by the kid’s frankness and intelligence. He felt like he was talking to the Director of the school.

“I promise Nuneo. I’ll do my best to do every suggestions that you suggested. And please, don’t hesitate to tell me your opinions okay? So it will help me on what to do to make our class livelier and cheerful.” He ruffled the kid’s red, soft hair, when someone knocked on the door.

“Nuneo?”

Nuneo jumped when he heard his name. “It must be umma!”

He opened the door, and saw his Nichkhun ahjussi. “Khunnie ahjussi! Why are you here?”

Nichkhun hugged the kid tight, panting heavily. “I’m sorry for being late Nuneo baby. Your umma was removing Wooyoung ahjussi’s tooth.”

“Oh why?” Nuneo asked, brushing the tall man’s sweaty bangs.

“Too much ice cream.” He chuckled. “Why are you here?”

“Oh. I was talking to Teacher Hw-“

The door suddenly opened, revealing Chansung who suddenly went dumbfounded.

Nichkhun’s eyes widened, blood rushing through his body like a fire.

“C-Chansung?”

“N-Nichkhun?”

The bell suddenly rang and sea of students rushed on the hallway preparing for the afternoon class.
