The carriage moved in a smooth pace, quite the opposite of how the master aboard inside was feeling - picturing different scenarios that might occur the moment he alight his transportation, which mostly begun with him being rejected completely from the very beginning. His train of thoughts had occupied him and without much time to prepare his heart, the coachman opened the door.
Jun paced like a fool outside the lounge, giving himself the moment he needed to approach the young man alone, but his luck was wearing thin as the time passed - Kazunari was fairly popular, strangers kept on engaging him into conversation. He’s too welcoming. Time passed at length and Jun was feeling irritated already, when finally Kazunari headed to his room - this is the chance he was waiting for. Finally. Jun followed from a fair distance.
When Kazunari entered his room, Jun gave a moment to wait a few minutes before he knocked on the young man’s door; to avoid any suspicion, and well because his nerves got the better of him.
Deep breathe.
He knocked as calmly as possible.
“For a moment please.” Kazunari answered.
It has not been so long since he had talked to the young man, but when he heard his voice, the feel of longing stirred in him.
When the door opened, the expression of shock in Kazunari’s face could not be denied. The young man stood without saying anything.
“God evening, Mr. Ninomiya” Jun greeted him politely, as if he was meeting the young man for the very first time. Kazunari still didn’t say a word, Jun clasped the letter from his pocket ready to hand it to the young man. This could be good, he might be more accepting in his state right now .
“Uhmm…this…”
“Oh my, this is such a surprise. I didn’t expect your company Mr. Matsumoto.” The voice of Kazunari’s uncle stopped Jun from speaking.
“Sir, I’m sorry to have dropped by unannounced. I had a business near and decided to say my greetings.” Jun found himself in an awkward position - his hand was still in his pocket, and greeting someone at the same time. Sometimes he thought that whenever he gathered enough strength to confront the young man, a force was trying to test him. Luckily, he was Jun Matsumoto, a man who was able to regain his composure and gave a reasonable excuse in tight situation.
“Please, don’t burden yourself too much Mr. Matsumoto. We are thankful for the time that our Kazunari was under your care.”
Jun took the conversation as a chance for him to give the letter without handing it down to Kazunari at the presence of his uncle, “It was my pleasure, sir. I want to apologize for not seeing you off this afternoon.”
“How about you join us for supper and we could forget about it?” Kazunari’s uncle imposed.
“Then I’ll burden you for this evening.” Jun calculated the manner of civility of Kazunari’s uncle and if he had been dismissed in his first attempt to be invited, he’d be the one to impose a compensation of apology.
“It’s settled then. Come on let’s get downstairs.” They all went down at the dining hall of the hotel. Jun could observe that Kazunari was hesitant but as of the moment Jun knew he would not risk to be told off by his uncle, especially when he was in the care of Matsumoto household of a good amount of time - he was tied to obligation.
Jun was sat across Kazunari, and the whole evening he was observing him without being too obvious - it can be said that Jun has a gift in observing Kazunari without making the young man conscious of it. He had done it for quite some time during his stay at Storm Village, when they were still not acquainted with each other. And for Kazunari to be completely unaware of Jun’s intention tonight and not let Kazunari a room to ask of his sudden business in a place near where he was staying, Jun engaged Kazunari’s uncle in a business conversation, which he knew the young man absolutely less interested.
The night went on - other businessmen who happened to be staying in the hotel joined at some point of the night and alcohol was served occasionally - to the point that Kazunari’s auntie had to excuse herself and retire early. When everyone got about their own concerns, only the three gentlemen were left on the lounge and soon Kazunari’s uncle could no longer handle his liquor and was escorted by one of the hotel staff.
Awkwardness took over the two immediately - they became conscious of each other’s presence all of a sudden. And Jun knew that this was the chance he was waiting for and he had to grab the opportunity before anything got in the way.
He reached inside his pocket - the same nervousness he felt earlier came rushing through his whole body. Nevertheless, he took out the letter and placed it down on the table.
“I just wanted to give you this.” Jun said so softly that he didn’t even know if the other was able to hear him clearly and then left the room without looking back. He was too afraid that Kazunari would say something and lead everything to another argument - that was not the purpose of this meeting and he would be led down that path. At least not today.
---
Jun was nursing a headache - either from the alcohol intake or the lack of sleep. Or maybe from both. He didn’t feel like doing any work this early but Mr. Watanabe, the punctual man that he was, was already arrange the things Jun needed for the day - the clothes, the letters that arrived the day before and the business documents that could no longer be delayed. So, Jun was obliged to get up from bed and prepare for the day’s work.
He was eating his breakfast leisurely when his eyes shifted coincidentally to the pile of letter on the side table - something stuck out. Jun got up and reached for the letter. And he was not mistaken; it was a letter of news from Storm Village from Satoshi Ohno, Jun remembered him as Kazunari’s closest friend. Jun hurriedly open the letter and was appalled with the content - cold sweat broke out. It’s all my fault.
He called for Mr. Watanabe, he needed to go immediately.
