Okay. This isn't exactly topical. Unfortunately, the ramblings of others have brought my level of frustration high enough to take valuable time from putting off end-of-semester projects in front of the television and devote it to addressing a topic many people couldn't care less about. Some people have decided to take the Paris riots as an ( Read more... )

Can we continue to bash France (and America) for their crappy handling of racial and ethnic situations?

I agree with you on several points, mostly that French bashing is possibly the most pointless activity in the world. Not to be snarky, but WHO CARES about the French?? Chaos is coming from the Middle East, China and India are days away from overtaking us as a superpower- and we're worried about the FRENCH? I think we pick on them because they're soft targets; they don't have enough financial stake in this country to make them off-limits. Oh, no - there's no justification for the violence and destruction that has been going on for weeks. What got my goat is someone who pretty much stated flat out that the rioting is due to the "french-ness" of the French. Oh yes, wine and cheese were referenced, and the word "frog" was used. It was very upsetting.
I agree that any rioting is not a legitamite form of protest. It's a mass outbreak of anger that could be used better to fuel constructive change.
Thank God for people like yourself, who can (and desire) to engage intellegent opinion-making.

You are well within your rights - because, seriously - they folded like a cheap deck chair. As long as you don't think that they 'owe' us anything, we're cool.

Not owe us anything, per se, but I do wish they would relax their rules pertaining to wine exportation.
