Review - The Autumnlands Vol. 1: Tooth and Claw

Mello. Man, it's been a while. Wanted to give a small review of a comic I've read some time back. Not my usual style of review, but wanted to write something.

The Autumnlands written by Kurt Busiek and drawn by Benjamin Dewey is a fantasy comic with a dash of science ficition. Taking place in a world where anthropomorphic animals live, Tooth and Claw is about the wizards of the flying city of Keneil trying to restore the magic that seems to be fading. To that end, they summon the Great Champion, the one who brought magic into the world in the first place. To no one's surprised, the Great Champion is a human, a futuristic soldier named Steven Learoyd, who's...not really okay being in a world with talking animals.

The writing is pretty good, having cohesive sentences that don't feel stiff and/or unnatural. The artwork is beautiful and detailed, especially when we get to the pages that look like paintings. The characters don't have as much depth to them, but they have traits that make them more than 2-D. Despite having anthropomorphic animals as characters, it's not a children's story, having violence, swearing, and some moments of nudity that would make it an R-rated movie.

I highly recommend this comic. If you like fantasy you might I would say if you like the Redwall books you might like this.
