So, it's Advent, the time leading up to Christmas.
I like Christmas carols. I like singing, with groups of folks, songs we all know and like. I like recorded Christmas carols. So, for a month or so, I get to listen to some great music.
(I'd like to note, for the record, I don't much care for those radio stations that have play nothing but "holiday songs" like "White Christmas", "Jingle Bell Rock", "Sleigh Ride", "Silver Bells", and so forth. Really, I find as I get older I have less and less tolerance for the unrelenting "Currier & Ives" songs. Bleagh!)
I also allow myself one quart of some holiday drink. This year, it's a quart of chocolate mint milk. Yum.
Many years ago, my old friend Nigel noted that there were two Christmases. One had Santa, plastic reindeer, tinsel, and trees. The other has Christ's birth, angels, plastic camels, and three wise men. And they're both legitimate holidays. The secular Christmas is a noble invitation to stop buying stuff you want, and think about your friends and family members, and consider what they might like.
My favorite answer to: "Santa's not real. You bought that!" would be "Oh, Santa is real. I am part of Santa. And, now that you know the secret, you're part of Santa, too."
