Because this hasn't been talked about to death already ...
Right, well. While I, like the rest of the world, was spitting mad on Monday, I am considerably calmer now. While, yes, it is shit to hear about these things and, furthermore, it is perfectly justifiable that we get upset over something we love being used purely for the purpose of making WB money, now I feel more meh about it. We're used to this. It doesn't matter. It'll still be interesting, and if it's terrible, well, canon > films anyway.
That said, there are some SERIOUS things wrong with what we've heard, and that's not including things like Ron not being a prefect, the cutting of the Quibbler article (one of my favourite bits:(((((), no ACCIO BRAIN!, no Molly's boggart, etc - there are some things - things that have been changed rather than cut - that have morphed the story.
Most Unforgivable Changes that have been made to OotP (in Order of Importance):
5. The Luna obsession. Sorry guys, but I'm not the biggest fan. I don't dislike her at all, but I'm just not that attached to her. And the way in which I do like her is probably going to be ruined if I keep seeing OMG EVANNA IS PERFECT. Yeah yeah I'm sure she's great. I honestly bet I will be watching it, going "Evanna Lynch really is a perfect Luna" - but that does not mean that I want that perfection shoved down my throat. Luna has, what, three scenes in OotP? Guess what - that's the same amount as Ginny. Luna is just not that special, and if you want me to develop a loathing of the character, you're going the right way about it.
4. Okay, I said that ACCIO BRAIN! was not going to be in here, but it's not the exclusion of the funniest section of any battle sequence evar that bothers me, it's what it, together with Hermione being knocked out, stands for. Now, to me, the importance of what happens to Ron and Hermione in the climax of OotP is that they are made useless very near the beginning of the action - they are wiped out as possible help to Harry. Who are the characters left helping him? The ones that he didn't want to take with him in the first place. And while Neville, Luna and Ginny are not that useful, they're a damn sight more help than Ron and Hermione. That's why I never understood people saying that Hermione's near-death experience at the end of the book is a sign of H/Hr - I always thought that it meant that Ron and Hermione are not necessarily better than everyone else.
Also, no Uranus joke. :(
3. Ginny. Her lines are given to Hermione, no "lucky you", no Chocolate in the Library, yadda yadda yadda. It's all already been said (in the journals I read, anyway.)
Listen, WB: you may be wishing that Harry will ditch Ginny and get with Luna in DH so that you can have a decent actress as the love interest, but it is not going to happen. Luna is a comic sideplot. Live with it. Dump Bonnie and get a decent actress if you wish, I don't care, but give us some build up, and more importantly, give Ginny back her personality.
2. Harry/Cho. I was looking forward to this, but now it seems that it's being changed into something it isn't. The main culprit of this crime is the fact that she is now playing the role of the Sneak - fine, ok, I predicted that she or Michael Corner would have to do it, as there is no Marietta. But - she is forced to do it through Veritaserum and then Harry dumps her? No, no, no! Problem a) So, ok, Harry is now officially a heartless bastard who dumps his girlfriend because she is poisoned into betraying him? Super, great. Problem b) This smells of their relationship is torn apart by Umbridge!!1 when, actually, they fall apart because they just don't work. WB: it is not a doomed love story. It is a teenage relationship which fails because the characters just don't really click.
Also, no date. :(((
And, joint firsts:
1. The hand, the detention, the writing - and everything connected. Harry's first detention = one of the best scenes in the books so far. So why is everything to do with this been changed? I was actually about to scream when I read that the whole of the DA is put in detention as well. I was mollified somewhat by the implication that they are not put in detention until later in the film, after Harry's first ones alone with Umbridge. But, STILL. As my friend said, "So now pretty much anyone can go up to Scrimgeour and show him the shit on their hand?" So much GAH.
And then, there is the fact that they changed what is actually written on his hand to something which not only changes the whole meaning of why he is put in detention, but which is also pretty lame. The person refered to the writing as "I must not tell lies", but not specifically in answer to a question, I don't think, so I think it was probably just a mistake on the part of the reviewer. I am not hopeful.
And ...
1. Lily. Apparently, she "does not stick up for Snape in the Worst Memory part".
WHAT.
Maybe this is just me, but I always assumed that any person with half a brain cell would have noticed that this scene is not about James. It is about Lily.
But, of course! Harry hasn't noticed that yet, so WB hasn't either!
In conclusion:
I must remind you of what I said at the beginning - I am no longer that cut up about all this. Or ... well, I wasn't before I started writing this post. I've worked myself up into a frenzy again.
Meh. I'll be over it by July.
P.S. I ship YOU/Hagrid,
pumpkinpasty .
