Heh heh. I like FF12 but I'll admit that its gameplay can be rather tedious at times. The game requires you to do a lot of micromanaging and level grinding to the point where even I was getting burned out towards the end (and I actually like doing stuff like that- FF Tactics was my bitch for a loooong time).
If you haven't played Shadow Hearts Covenant I'd really suggest playing that. The battle system is turned based so it's not gonna be with the button mashing like the Tales games however the judgment ring is fun to play with. Also the game has a gay vampire wrestler and assorted crack that makes dancing otters seem sane. (Game also wins extra points for the requisite romance subplot not sucking).
Covenant is a direct sequel to Shadow Hearts, but the game does do a pretty good job of explaining all of what's going on so don't let that stop ya. :)
What you just said is EXACTLY what my impression of the game was. I feel much better about disliking that game now that my theory of its universal horror has been refuted. Has Moses showed up yet? He's actually a great character, so there's still some hope left for it :) Also, is it just me or do the weird looped character animations during the cut scenes kind of weird you out? They looked way too real for me, especially on the deformed character models.
Also, wait until you're about 20-30 hours in (can't remember exactly where it happens), but the otters and the town dance squad actually JOIN FORCES to bring the game to new levels of horror. I literally threw down the controller because I just couldn't comprehend what was going on. It's a terror. Believe me, I wouldn't lie to you.
