I never thought I’d fall in love.
You see, I’ve never had fantasies of falling in love with a guy and all those childish fairytales. I never believed in love.
I’ve always been a tomboy. Acting all boyish with my short messy hair. My mom made an effort to make me look girly, but.. it’s just not me.
Don’t get me wrong, I’m not a lesbian… I’ve just not been in a relationship. EVER.
All my life I thought of love as bullshit. I don’t see the good point of it. Why? Well you really cant blame me, I grew up surrounded by my parents’ ugly love affair. Oh they were loving parents, but their relationship was not. They fight and hurt each other all the time. I don’t even know how they managed to be together for decades with that kind of relationship.
I don’t think I’m a man hater. I don’t hate them, I just…. Don’t see myself in a relationship.
I was ready to spend my whole life alone.
But then I met him.

*Flashback*
Summer of 2010, Los Angeles.
“This is going to be one hell of a vacation.” My bestfriend, Kyra, has been on it non-stop the minute we landed here. And, that was yesterday.
So we were on a vacation courtesy of our company. It was a raffle, and apparently, I won. But Kyra disagreed saying that it was fixed because our boss was hitting on me.
I shrugged it off and just happily took the reward, I need to unwind anyways.
And so here we are, strolling down the streets of Los Angeles, trying not to go too far coz we are both non-english speakers.
“I’ve always dreamt of being here in LA, don’t you, Kazuya?” Kyra was all over the place, and she keeps on saying the same words over and over again.
“For the love of God, Kyra, one more of that and I’m going back to the hotel. Why are you so excited about this anyway?”
She sighed dramatically, “Oh come on, can’t you be more enthusiastic?! This is LA! God! Everybody wants to be here!”
“I don’t.”
Kyra face-palmed. We are the complete opposite. She’s very enthusiastic about everything…. And I’m just too boring. I don’t even know how she manages to be with me all the time.
“You know what? Why don’t we just go shopping? That’s the main reason why I wanted to be here.”
“Oh no thanks. You know that’s not my cup of tea. I’d be happier to just go back to our hotel and get some rest. I’ve some serious headache.”
Kyra hesitated, saying that we should explore as much as we can because we’re only here for a week. But that wasn’t the reason why I wanted to be here. I’m here to relax, unwind, and just get away from all the stress back in Japan.
“Seriously, Ky. I’m fine, just go by yourself. I’m sorry I can’t accompany you, but you know me. You’ll end up unhappy if you go shopping with me.”
“Fine, fine.. just make sure you get back safely to the hotel alright? I’ll be back as soon as I can.” And with that, we parted ways.
I was hurrying back to the hotel. The headache was a lie and I’m pretty sure Kyra knows that. I just want to be alone.
But then suddenly I felt weird. I have this feeling someone’s looking at me… like.. following me. It scared the shit out of me.
I started walking faster, but I can still see on the corner of my eyes that someone was INDEED following me. I was starting to hope that it was just Kyra playing pranks on me but I got a glimpse that it was a guy.
Oh God!
I ran around, trying to find a hiding place. I wanted to approach someone but since I really cant speak English, it’d probably be just a waste of time.
Then I found an alley.
It was dark, and I was wearing black (most of the times, in that matter) so I thought I’d mix in to the darkness.
Then I saw him.
The man following me. On his hand was a camera.
“Eh? I wonder where that girl went.” My eyes grew wide. The man speaks Japanese!
And so I know I had to approach him.
I firmed my stand and walked towards the man with all the strength I had. He noticed my presence and immediately turned to face me.
“Why were you following me?!” I spat out.
“Oh God, you scared me.” He clutched his chest comically as if having a mini heart attack.
“I SHOULD BE THE ONE SAYING THAT TO YOU! WHY THE HELL WERE YOU FOLLOWING ME?!”
“Hey, hey, relax! I didn’t mean to scare you. I was just taking your pictures.” And to emphasize his point, he raised his camera.
My blood boiled even more. HE WAS TAKING PICTURES OF ME?!
“HOW CAN YOU SAY THAT LIKE IT’S THE NORMALEST THING TO DO?!”
“What’s wrong with taking pictures?”
“WELL IT’S NOT NICE TO TAKE SOMEONE’S PICTURE WITHOUT THEIR PERMISSION!”
“Miss, miss, calm down. It was just a picture. And I was just really drawn to you, you looked interesting that’s why.”
ME? INTERESTING? This man has got to be kidding!
“You’re crazy. A lunatic! Get the hell away from me and delete those pictures!”
“Sorry, I have a no-delete policy.” And with that, he walked away.
I stared at his retreating form, still in shock. How can someone be so carefree?
Now I’m really having a headache.
-----
The next few days were the same. Kyra was still on her ‘OMG-isn’t-this-exciting’ mode. And I was trying to recover from that weird encounter with fellow Japanese the other day.
So now I’m sitting here at a coffee shop, trying to soothe myself with a nice warm cup of coffee. Kyra was by the counter, seemingly not decided on what to order.
I closed my eyes for a while, enjoying the relaxing ambience when suddenly I felt someone sit on the chair in front of me. It’s got to be Kyra. “Finally-“ I opened my eyes only to see a familiar face.
“Hi!”
IT WAS THE WEIRD GUY FROM THE OTHER DAY!
“WHAT THE HELL ARE YOU DOING HERE?!” I yelled and everyone looked weirdly at me.
“Why? Can’t I go grab a cup of coffee?” He was grinning.
“You’re following me!”
“No I’m not. I was here longer than you are. I saw you the minute you walked in.”
“Liar! You’re a stalker, aren’t you?! I’m calling the cops!”
He just laughed. This guy is seriously twisted!
And then Kyra was beside me. “What’s wrong, Kazuya?”
“Ah, so your name is Kazuya. I’m Akanishi Jin.” Seemingly not bothered by how freaked out I am, the man had the guts to introduce himself.
“I AM NOT INTERESTED TO KNOW YOU, YOU PSYCHO!” I turned to Kyra, “Let’s go.” And I stood up.
“Can I see you again?” that question had me frozen. This guy has to be a joke, right?!
“I DON’T KNOW WHICH PART OF LEAVE ME ALONE YOU DON’T GET BUT I SURE AS HELL WONT BE SEEING YOU AGAIN!”
The man, whose name I really did not remember, let out a small laugh, “Oh Kazuya, I think we will.”
I didn’t say anything more and just left in a hurry- Kyra tagging behind me.
“What was that about?” she asked, clueless.
“I seriously don’t know. All I know is that guy’s a lunatic and that we should head back to Japan like, right now!”
Kyra didn’t protest, much to my surprise. Maybe the scene from earlier worried her too.
Damn, I flew here to LA to have a peace of mind, but I got the exact opposite. Kyra was right, this was one hell of a vacation.
-----
One month after.
“I’M GETTING MARRIED!” Kyra screamed the minute she entered the office.
All our officemates were cheering and congratulating her. She was all smiles.
“Kazuya can you believe it?! I’m getting married! Hiro proposed to me last night!” Too squeaky. But understandable, I mean, she’s getting married after all.
“I’m really happy for you, Ky. You’ve been waiting for this.”
“I know right?! I just can’t believe it, this is just so amazing!”
And yes, we spent the day with Kyra still so excited and talking about all the wedding stuffs. I tried to endure it, but this is one of those moments I wish we can stop hearing when we want to.
I just don’t get the point of marriage.
“Kazuya, I’m sure you’ll help me with everything, right?!” and that was that one thing I was fearing to hear from her.
And of course I had no choice.
---
So far, I’ve managed to endure a week of Kyra’s wedding preparation. It was torture for me since i had to go to all wedding boutiques with her, meaning, shopping.
“Oh Kazuya, can I ask one more favor from you?” Oh God, no more shopping please.
“Shoot.”
“Can you go pick someone up on the airport tomorrow? He’s Hiro’s friend, a photographer from LA. I wanted to go pick him up myself but I have a meeting to attend tomorrow, so… can you?” Troublesome, but at least it’s not shopping.
“Sure, give me the details.”
And so, tomorrow came. 8pm, airport. I’ve been here since 5pm, which was supposedly the plane’s arrival but it was delayed. And I don’t know if I can wait much longer.
“Flight 223 from LA has arrived.”
Finally! I stood up, hoping that Hiro’s friend would come out soon. I took a glance on the paper on my hand and the name written on it. “Akanishi Jin-sounds familiar.” I shrugged, I was sure I’ve heard of that name before.
When I saw people coming out, I immediately raised the paper up but no one came to me. Not until the last person was out.
I stared at him.
He walked towards me.
My eyes grew wide.
This cannot be happening.
“Akanishi Jin.” Now I know why that name sounded so familiar! IT WAS THE GUY FROM LA!
“Kazuya?” The man finally realized who I was. And a smile appeared on his lips. “I was right. We met again.”
