So I saw Superman Returns.
It was actually pretty freakin' sweet. Now, I've always said it, I am not particularly a fan of Superman (or DC stuff in general, with the exception of Batman). However, I had always wanted to see Returns, ever since I saw the short teaser at the beginning of X-3. Bryan Singer is an amazing director (as he proved with the first two X-Men movies; incidentally, Returns was the reason Singer didn't direct X-3). He knows how to handle superhero movies: how to keep them true to their source material without making them exclusive to the fanbase, how to develop characters effectively without a reasonable timeframe, how to give action right out of the panels of a comic book without making it impossible/cheesy/obviously CG. Superman Returns easily ranks up with X-Men (and X-2) and Batman Begins as superhero movie gold.
Now, that's not to say that I didn't have my issues with the movie; if this is indeed a sequel to the second Superman film, then why doesn't Lois know that Clark is Superman? I could have SWORN that she found out in Superman II. I mean, it's been about 7 or 8 years since I've seen it, but I'm pretty sure that she learned the identity of Superman's alter-ego in that. Also, I'm not quite sure how I feel about the kid being Superman's kid. But I will say this: the opening credits were so reminiscent of the Superman movies of yore, right down to the extending text and the zoom through the solar system. That was awesome.
Honestly, though, I like Superman way better as a
Communist (that's a link, by the way. Click it to see how awesome he looks with a hammer and a sickle adorning his chest, instead of an S).
On a final note, I feel obligated to inform you all of the teaser for another superhero movie known as "Spiderman 3". I honestly think that this too looks like an awesome movie.
Check it out!
