My two all-time favorite films are Ikiru and Seven Samurai. I love Throne of Blood as well. There's also the landmark "multiple-flashback" film Rashomon as well as Yojimbo, the birth of the modern anti-hero in movies. Don't forget the crime thrillers Stray Dog and High and Low also.

I know you mentioned that you're not really big on films that were adapted from theater, but if you like Kurosawa's use of color then you will find at least one thing to like about "Ran". I think it's one of the most vividly colored films I've ever seen.

indeed it is! i actually thought ran was really nicely done; i guess my fear of the stage to screen transfer is that it'll look stagey.
...is that george kostanza???? *loves!!!!!!!!!

If you have problems with things being adapted from theater to film, then I'd suggest you see "The Lower Depths (Donzoko)". It's based off the play of the same name, and I was highly impressed with it. But, more than most movies, it wasn't punched up with a lot of new locations and great sets, it was filmed with one set, and several different camera angles. Very powerful.

I found Throne of Blood to be so different from its source material in style that it felt like an almost completely different story-- and I majored in English and specialized in Elizabethan and Jacobean drama!

Seven Samurai still ranks as the best on my list, probably followed by Ikiru as a close second.

those are bothe kurosawa.... i haven't seen yojimbo yet, but i got rashomon... that one is a piece of work la--it's like observation of human character; not really for entertainment value, or something. very interesting; film as philosophy.
