ok so werewolves can sometimes hear their mates in their heads to help them find them, they cant talk back and forth (they hear stuff most when the mate experiences strong emotions) but it helps the wolf get to know and find their mate who could be anywhere in the world.
Derek is frantic since he has been searching for the sad and lonely voice of his mate for years now. The voice has brought him to beacon hills but even though he listens hard he does not hear a voice that sounds like his mates and so he cannot find him. Stiles is of course Derek’s mate however having been born mute Derek cannot hear his voice and recognise him as mate. Stiles has a crush on smoking hot Derek Hale who just moved into town, but the sadness that haunts his eyes makes Stiles desperately want to help him
